University of Maryland - College Park EA Class of 2023

Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Enrolled at UMD for CS Fall - 2019. OOS-NJ, Chose UMD CS over Rutgers/RPI/Stevens/Drexel/Penn State. Really liked the campus. CS department/program is top notch as well.

Does anyone know how I could contact potential roommates? Is there another forum people are using for that?

@ClassyClassics - There is a facebook page. I tried to post the link, but it did not go through. Just search for UMD Class of 2023

Sorry if this question has been answered on previous pages (55 is a lot, lol) but can someone explain the process of requesting a roommate? I have submitted my housing agreement and I know you have to request a roommate in another way. Is there a deadline for doing so? I’m also in FC, so does this affect anything? Thanks

@Statsqueen - If 2 people want to be roommates, they both must send an email to Reslife requesting the other person. Being in FC is not an issue. I don’t know if there is a deadline, so I would say sooner is better.

There’s also a system for requesting roommates in MyDRL, which involves you sending a request directly to your roommate who can then accept it.

I’m going to be staying in Prince Fredrick next year with DCC. How would I meet people in the program or find a roommate? I’ve had little success navigating the Facebook page and my only solid plan is to meet as many people as possible at Orientation.

At oreintation, you will actually be rooming with another new freshman for one night and you will have the opportunity to meet others. If nothing works, you’ll probably get another DCC student as a roommate

Does anyone know the deadline for roommate requests? I know housing agreement has to be in by May 1st but I just want to confirm that roommate requests can happen after then

@Statsqueen - You should probably call ResLife to get an official answer.

My son is freshman connection too. Looking for a roommate and joined the Facebook site. If any boys still looking message me and maybe they can contact each other. We live in NY. Thanks

I spoke to someone in Res life recently, and they subtly mentioned that kids seem to do better when Res life matches up roommates as opposed to finding a roommate through the Facebook page. My son seemed to like that idea, as he is not a big fan of social media and not on Facebook.

My D went with a random roommate and it worked out just fine.

My son will also be in DCC. We were told that there would be a facebook page to meet others and possibly find roommates but we have not seen that yet.

@MarcieC - There is a facebook page. I tried to post the link, but it not allowed. Just search for UMD Class of 2023

Surprised ResLife would say random works out better than the student finding a roommate. I think there can be match-up failures in both approaches and would see no reason that the random approach would have a higher rate of success. My son went random at another school and it was not ideal, not terrible but he got no social value out of that roommate as they were civil but had nothing in common. My daughter at Maryland picked her roommate from Facebook and they get along great and are rooming together next year.

I would add it depends on what the student is looking for. Some are looking for a friend and companion in their roommate. Some just want someone to bunk with that doesn’t interfere with their studies.

I think it comes down to luck. When I was in college, I picked my roommate ahead of time, and it did not work out well, there was a blatant lack of respect. My son choose his roommate, and while they didn’t socialize much outside of the dorm room, there is mutual respect, they are both neat, clean and get along well. Good luck!

@wondering84 I’m in ACES, so I’ll be in Prince Frederick Hall as well! If you join the Honors Facebook group, we have a groupme with a few DCC people.
