University of Maryland vs. Lehigh

Now that all of the acceptances are in and she has crossed a bunch off her list it looks like D's final two choices are between Maryland and Lehigh. She has been admitted to the business school at both schools. She will probably focus on Marketing.

Any thoughts on one over the other. The obvious is that Lehigh is more expensive, but we are ok with that. The cost is a factor but not the deciding one. We will pay more if it looks like it is really the best "fit" for her.

Anyone have any opinions?

Maryland is a flagship state school and Lehigh is a private, nationally ranked university with a superior business school. Lehigh’s alumni connections are legendary, the campus is much smaller and personal. Both offer a robust Greek life if you daughter is so inclined. Highly recommend the accepted students day in April.

Legendary?

Hyperbole is the greatest thing ever.

Maryland also has excellent alumni connections, and proximity to the DC area has great value for jobs and internships.

Have you visited each school? Best way to get a feel for which is the better fit. They are quite different. Some love Lehigh’s campus, some can’t take the hill. Maryland is more spread out, and undergrad count is also 5x the size of Lehigh. Up to you if that’s pro or con.

Keep in mind that marketing might be one of those majors with lower pay or more difficulty with entry level jobs, compared to some other business majors. Lehigh will cost over $240,000. I love the school, but you have to ask yourself if that is good value for a marketing degree.

We have visited both schools. She loved them both. She did an admitted student day at Maryland already and will do an admitted day at Lehigh.

Yes, they both have excellent alumni connections. She can see herself at both schools. I am trying to take the $'s out of the mix. We can make Lehigh work, now I just want her to make the best decision for her.

She would probably go Greek at either school, that’s just her personality.

If money is truly not an object, and she likes the campus, and she looks good in brown, than I would choose Lehigh.

^LOL on looking good in brown. She had already thought of that! Said it’s not her favorite color, but she could rock it! It’s not that money doesn’t matter, but if I really think it’s the best place for her, we can do what we need to do, so I don’t want it to come down to money. She did say that she feels bad that it’s more. If at the end of April she can’t decide, then money wins!

I’m in the same position, deciding between UMD and Lehigh, but Tulane as well. It’s not easy! Is she in-state for Maryland?

Yes, in state for Maryland, how about you? Have you visited all 3? The scales have been tipping towards Lehigh in our house, but we still need to visit again before a final decision is made.
