University of Massachusetts Amherst or College of the Holy Cross?

So I narrowed my college pick down to Holy Cross and UMass Amherst. Both gave me a lot of aid and I would essentially be going to either college for the same cost. I am kind of conflicted on which to choose. I have not yet been to Holy Cross’ campus, but I know of the Jesuit tradition and ideals, since I attended a Jesuit high school. I loved my Highschool experience. I also loved UMass and how pretty and unique the town of Amherst is. It is so cute and there is always something going on. I haven’t heard great things about the Worcester area and night life for students, but again I haven’t visited the campus. I am a gay male and this is a core part of who I am. I know Holy Cross is fairly Liberal, but I am more worried about the social scene as a gay male. I am planing to major in the sciences (Biology most likely) and I know both are great for my area of study. I am just worried about my environment and my opportunities within each college. Thank you so much.

I would certainly visit Holy Cross and see what you think first-hand. Find out if there is a support group on campus and try to meet with someone there when you visit and ask your questions about the social scene etc. (if there is no such group that tells you something too). My S went to a different Jesuit college and the gay/lesbian community was very much accepted there.

Thank you so much!! @happy1

Also keep in mind that Worcester has a large population in a very liberal state and there are several other schools there like WPI, Clark and Assumption.

Personally I would be more concerned about the workload at Holy Cross. It has that reputation.

If your choice was academics alone, Holy Cross has the stronger bio program and science reputation. But since fit seems important to you, you will have to assess that from your visit. Both are in college towns, though as you point out Amherst is the better town, but don’t discount Shrewsbury street in Worcester, full of interesting restaurants and bars. Holy Cross will have a more community feel if that is important to you.

Holy Cross is phenomenal but we were late to the parade for the LGBT community. They are Catholic but Jesuits are known for pushing the envelope. I think the better education is at HC–thats a no brainer. Being gay is inescapable, you cannot turn it off, it who you are. People are going to be homophobic everywhere. Visit and discuss what the LGBT community is doing. see if they have the same gripes as the students in UM at Amherst. Academically HC is better, you have to figure out the rest.

Thank you @CollegeGriot I am now choosing between Holy Cross and Boston College. I am excited to learn of their LGTBQ programs when I visit. Thank you again for your help!!

Did you get Commonwealth Honors at UMass?
Can you visit? (If you don’t have the financial means, request help - many colleges will be able to susidize your transportation and will give you cafeteria tickets.)

BC is best of those three and liberal given few Jesuits teach there. Never heard student body is homophobic. Two friends of my son went there and loved it. As long as similar aid packages, go with BC.

Holy Cross has better science programs than Boston College. HC also has stronger alumni network.

Have you chosen yet? I know Holy Cross is much more accepting than BC
