I have to narrow down my list, so these are the two I need to choose from. I am premed majoring in biology/biochemistry/neuroscience. I come from a school where people complained about learning and would brag about getting Cs on essays because they didn’t care about their grades. I really want a school that is high in intellectual curiosity but not cutthroat. I want a school with good research opportunities AND high volunteering and civic engagement AND premed advising. I would love a solid newspaper as well. It would be nice for some diversity because I’m black but I live in a predominantly white area so it’s not a necessity. I don’t really know if I want Greek or sports life because I was really involved in sports culture at my school. It’s cool to have it but I can do without it.
University of Miami
- Major: Biochemistry
- Good pre med
- Would minor in English
- 27% acceptance rate
- Higher ranking
- In washington DC (pro)
- Have asl, newspaper, and active minds
- Have mindfulness club, asl club, and newspaper
George Washington University
- Major: Neuroscience
- Good pre med
- Would minor in Journalism (really happy about)
- Has an student EMT (which I like)
- 40% acceptance rate
- According to common data set I would need a 1430 to consider it to be more in the safety range
- In washington DC (pro)
- Have asl, newspaper, and active minds
- Political active
Not sure your stats but Case Western, Pitt. Iowa (safety) all have really good Pre Med
GWU offers a BA/MD program that might interest you. Also, Miami has a medical scholars program.
I am a little confused by your description. Miami is in Miami, correct? Not DC
Both are excellent institutions with great medical schools. The accelerated programs are worth a look.
UM it’s all about the U. Sports culture is alive and well at UM and South Beach and Brickell for parting, Now that’s out of the way. Medicine and Law is what they are known for. The main medical area is about 20 minutes from main campus.
George Washington not familiar with
Pre Med is hard only about 40% of freshman Pre Med make it into Med School and a long expensive journey (We will be starting it with D23)
Find a school you like and can excel in. GPA matters.
You don’t talk budget but 8 years of schooling adds up look to save if you can in the undergrad
You have to live there 4 years - day after day. Do you want a traditional campus or an urban campus that has no dining halls?
That - and cost - are what i’d look at.
You didn’t give your stats - so we have no clue if either is right.
If your a girl I recommend looking into Agnes Scott as well. It’s pretty diverse (60% POC) in a bigger city and has a good pre med program. There are chances to volunteer as well

Given your 2 choices, GW sounds like the better fit to me. It has a lot of things you like.
It sounds like you are trying to control the size of your list, not deciding on an ED school. You don’t have to decide that now. Do have any EA or rolling admission schools on your list that have a Dec 15th or earlier notification date? If so, use them to make modifications to your list as you get responses. It is ok to have many more schools on your possible list in July than the max number that you will ultimately apply.
