I have visited the University of Miami and I have attended an informational session. The campus is amazing and the programs they offer there sound like they are on par with what I am interested in. However, I am concerned with the fact that it is ranked the number one part school. Its a competitive school, so I feel like the kids must be smart, but do most of the kids go out and go clubbing every weekend? Are drugs big there? I am not a club type of person, I consider myself to be somewhat intellectual, not that I don't party but I'm more interested in a Greek or Bar type of scene. Would Miami be a bad fit for me?

Not all of the kids at UMiami go out and go clubbing every weekend and drugs are not as big there as a school like Vermont or Skidmore. Only 14% of UMiami students are involved in Greek Life so it is not overwhelming the campus. Social life is not only focused at the bars and clubs but also at the restaurant, shops, and movie theatres in Coconut Grove and South Beach.

The University of Miami is much less of a party school than your average University. The Greek scene is much smaller and the parties are off campus. They have not been at the top of anyone’s party list recently until Playboy came out with their ridiculous new list. They used things like “average days of sunshine” and “brains” to calculate the #1. Look at the list, most of the top schools are in sunny locales. And what brains has to do with partying I’ll never understand.

Oh, I forgot to add that they have many “substance free” floors in one of the the freshman dorms that are very popular. So much so that this year’s freshman lobbied the adminstration to extend substance free to the upperclassmen’s dorms and were successful.

The new Playboy Top Party Schools puts into account academics, weather, and how hot the student body. It doesn’t even rank things like alcohol and drug consumption (Like I guess it used to), so UM is just a great school overall. I really should’ve applied there…

So Greek = Good? Or… Greek = Bad?

I think OP just doesn’t like clubbing, and house parties and bars are more for him. So small Greek parties are good while large ones are bad?

well it depends which way the OP looks at it, if the OP thinks Greek Life is a good idea, 14% of the student body is greek, if the OP thinks Greek Life is a bad idea, then only 14% of the student body is greek.

I have to say that U Miami gets a really bad rap on this board, I believe because of its price tag. It is a great school with excellent academics, campus and student life.
It did not strike me as a big Greek life university. A friend of mine went there, and I visited several times…
At least not a Greek scene like Penn St, U Conn, or U Florida.

haha i like greek life and i know they have it there i was worried that clubbing was the primary form of night life, and i dont really see myself going out to clubs

Thursday night is the popular night to go to Coconut Grove and hit up the bars there and Saturday night is South Beach. Yes, clubbing is big at UM. At least that was my son’s experience. He went with the idea of hating the clubbing scene, but after about a year he was at South Beach pretty regularly. It’s just where the nightlife is a lot of the time. He also went Greek but found Greek life wasn’t really his thing. There are house parties and frat parties too. UM is more of a drinking school and some drugs but not hard drugs.

I’m looking at Um and I don’t think I’d be into clubbing that much, but I’d be willing to give it a try.
But I’d rather just hang or go to a regular party.

wait until you see the women in south beach

Lex/Coollege,

A lot will depend on who you associate with or if you decide to rush…Similar to what Lily said, I have heard on certain nights people do things at different spots, however, it can run the gamut from clubs in SoBe and downtown to smaller places in The Grove to going to see movies at Sunset Place.

Not exactly sure you will see Mr. Hefner leading the clubbing…

To me there is no better place than UM to go to college. Miami is simply the best city in the world for a young person.

Miami has never made the top “party” lists in Princeton Review’s Annual Rankings nor the “alcohol and drugs” rankings. University of Florida is the one that gets consistently ranked pretty high in those two categories, and for the last couple of years, it has been number 1 or 2.

I really do not know where that party reputation for Miami comes from. Just because South Beach is an international playground does not mean the university atmosphere is like that at all. After all, the campus is in Coral Gables, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Florida. Is Columbia a party place? After all, it is in Manhattan…

Gainesville sucks. Great place for rednecks who only want to drink.

Miami is Miami. It’s 85 and sunshine in January. In NY meanwhile people are walking in the snow. Plus you got Canes Football, the most winning team in the history of college football. Does Columbia even have a football team?
