I was looking at Miami's On Campus Recruiting List and it is quite impressive. It Includes Barclays, Citi, JPmorgan, Morgan Stanley, Raymond James, TD Bank and other well known firms. My question is, are these back office jobs or real investment banking opportunities? It would be really helpful if a current student gave insight to the topic at hand. Being that Miami is my favorite school and I really want to go there, I will go wherever the best opportunities for investment banking are which is why i am pressing this topic so hard to find out if there is a good chance at becoming an investment banker from miami. So, anybody with information regarding who else recruits on campus and numbers as to previous classes and amount of investment banking internship and full time opportunities that you know about PLEASE SHARE!

Operations.

I know people at Miami. Basically no front office.

For the most part, it will not be front office. That said, I know of a few people who landed gigs in IB from the school, but they were with boutiques and regional shops. If you just want IB (boutique, regional), you have a shot at breaking in from Miami, but if you want BB IB, or a much better shot, Miami is not your best bet.

There are,of course, ways to break in from the school, but you’ll seen as coming from a non-target and will need to approach recruiting from a [non-target perspective](http://www.bankonbanking.com/2009/05/15/breaking-through-the-school-barriers-and-into-investment-banking/) since the banks don’t recruit for FO at your school.

PM me if you have any other questions.

is it possible to move up and be promoted from operations up to middle and front office? Or once your there your stuck.

From back to middle, yes. From back to front, it is much more difficult (unless of course, you go the indirect MBA route). For IB, it is nearly impossible, for S&T it is possible and I’ve seen it, but it is still very unlikely, especially depending on the BB.

Depends on the person. If you have 2300+ SAT and 4.0 GPA from Miami, the recruiters who recruits for the back office may make an exception. I don’t know how many of people like that exist though.

so the bottom line is its near impossible to become an i-banker front office. If there is any current UM student reading please post if you have a discrepancy because i really want to keep the hope alive of going to UM and being an IB. Do you know of any banks at all regional boutiques or any boutiques that recruit at miami for investment banking?

I just said above that it is possible to break into IB and even pointed out an article that helps non-target students on the path. The fact is, UM is not a target for the BBs when it comes to IB. As a result, it will be much more difficult, albeit still possible. Additionally, there is more to IB than the BB space and if you are interested in IB in general, there are regional shops and small boutiques that will consider UM students, especially with a finance or accounting background and strong GPA.

I know current seniors who just went through SA recruiting last fall and are currently exploring full-time options. There is one bank that recruits on campus for front office.

Could you list that bank? Also if you have a job at a small boutique acn you eventually move up to a BB or another well respected firm easily?
