Hi,
I’m a rising senior at a private school in Michigan. I have a 3.9 GPA and a 30 on the ACT. I have taken 6 total honors and 2 AP courses in my high school career including the classes that I will take in my senior year. 70% applicants in my high school have been accepted into UofM. My common app and Michigan-specified essays have been profusely reviewed and edited by many people, including my college counselor and a boy attending Northwestern with a 35 on the ACT who got into UMich with Early Action. My hobby essay is about volunteering at Summer in the City, my “group” essay is about being Armenian, and my LSA essay is very specific and draws information from the website. I have 10 activities on my common app listed, many of which consist of achievements such as a state finalist 2 years in a row on my varsity hockey team, gold medalist in the choir’s annual Michigan competition, medals in the National Spanish exam from taking 7 years of all honors spanish courses, volunteering at Beaumont and Summer in the City, helping raise rescued animals, being a lead actress in my school’s plays, and more. With a strong reccomendation letter to vouch for me by my history teacher who’s had me for 2 years and my college counselor who is familiar with the Michigan admissions office, what do you think my chances are of getting in with Early Action? It’s quite hard to achieve; only the top 10% of the 70% of applicants get in EA, but will my extracurriculars and the other components of my application help me succeed?
You may be deferred from EA. Your chance for admission at the end is a bit lower than the ~45% in state admission rate due to the below average ACT score.
That’s true, thank you for replying!
Being in-state will help you. If you’re first generation, in state…it will help you quite a bit. Your stats aren’t bad…I think your chances are average to good. Good luck!
There are not many people who play varsity hockey…AND are lead actresses in plays. I think this is one of the most interesting things about you…your range of interests and breaking gender stereotypes. They’ll love that you’re good at a second language, too. I have a good feeling about your application. Let us know!
Your feedback really just boosted my confidence!! Thank you so much I will for sure let you know!!
I would suggest you to retake ACT if possible. ACT 30 is near the borderline for admission.
how did it go? did you hear anything back from them?
Yes I got in!!!
