I am applying to the University of Michigan (early action) and I was hoping that you could all help me figure out my chances of getting in, if you need more information just ask!!!
I’m a Michigan resident.
I am a minority (female, middle eastern, and muslim, a triple whammy lol).
I have a 4.22 GPA
I’ve gotten 4’s and 5’s on all AP exams taken, 5 exams in all.
I am number 5 in my class.
My SAT score is lacking, a 1320, but I’m retaking that this coming August, I don’t have high hopes though as this is my highest score out of the three times I’ve taken it. However, I did score a perfect score on the essay section of the SAT (all 8’s), so maybe that’ll help me out as well.
I’ve been really heavy on my extracurriculars- President of my school’s Joyful Heart Foundation ( we help foster children and victims of domestic abuse), secretary of the Arab Student Union, I’m involved in my town’s Youth Affairs Commission, am an Ambassador for the National DoSomething Organization (out of school), and a couple more things.
if there’s anything else you need to know, just ask!!!
I’d also be grateful if anyone could pm me and help me revise my common app essay and supplementary essays!
What’s your intended major? If you’ve taken the most challenging curriculum possible to support your intended major, that will help you. Being in state helps you. Being a minority doesn’t help or hurt…it’s not considered at UMich.
Your SAT concerns me. It’s low for UMich…but your high gpa will help when considering this. Try the ACT. Some students do better on the ACT than that SAT. Particularly, if you’re going into science, since the ACT has a science section.
as of now, I’m undeclared… I’ve tried the ACT, but I didn’t do well, so I’m not sending that (26) in.
I know that the 25th percentile of admissions at UMich is a 1350, I was 30 points short so I’m hoping they don’t fault me for it if I can’t bring that score up.
Your guidance counselor should have an idea based on previous year’s kids who have applied and been accepted or not. Michigan high schools are fairly predictive.
I’m going to be a freshman at Michigan in the fall, so I can speak from experience.
I’m from New Jersey, had a 3.9 weighted gpa, 31 ACT, was president of my french club, did a lot of community service and other smaller clubs, had taken only 2 AP classes when I applied (+5 APs after; my dad thinks they liked how hard I went senior year), wrote a really good essay (if I can brag) and still got into LSA EA.
I’m sure you don’t have to worry AT ALL. You sound way above their average, and even though the SAT score is a little low, with everything else you’ve done, I don’t think it will be that worrying. I’m still in shock that I managed to get in. For you, I wouldn’t even sweat it! Make sure to apply for Early Action though-- better chances anyway.
Really? Would you mind if I asked to read your essays? Yeah, my sat converted to act is a 28, but I’m retaking it this August, I doubt ill do as well as the 28, but I can try.
Your GPA is fine but your test score is below the 25th percentile (and perhaps even the 10th percentile). In state admission rate is around 45%, but the applicants are self-selected (mostly with higher stat). You do need to bring up your test score for a reasonable chance to get in.
reem, Middle Eastern is not considered a minority. It falls under caucasian. And being muslim does not help (or hurt) your chances. If you can improve your SAT to 1400 or better, your chances of admission are good.
Glad to see the 2017 admission data is posted. The SAT score mid 50 (1440-1570) for 2016 was based on a very small sample size that is not reliable at all. The new mid 50 of 1350-1530 is much more reliable and inline with the ACT mid 50 of 31-34.
It will be interesting to see the range for incoming freshmen. It will likely be 30-33 and 1320-1500. I guess we have to wait for the CDS to know for sure.
I agree the enrolled freshmen mid 50 ACT may be 1 point lower as in the past. The yield rate is again higher this year but not high enough to narrow that gap. Nevertheless, I do think the admission state to be important to assess the chance of admissionew particularly for OOS students.
