This question may be stupid (idk) but it is as follows: Is it possible for a student to be accepted to the university, but not gain admission to the specific school/college that they indicated they would like to attend in their application?

Ex: I am applying to University of Michigan and in the application I indicated that I would like to go to the College of Engineering...is it possible for me to get in to Michigan and not the school of Engineering?

I know that this is possible at some universities, but I wasn't sure if it was true for all schools, specifically UofM

While true at some schools, at Michigan you are only considered for the schools you apply to. So if you apply to Engineering, they will only consider you for that school. They won’t reject you there but accept you into LSA.

The only exception would be Ross pre-admission.
Nevertheless, if you apply EA to CoE and got deferred, you may call the adcom to ask for switching to LSA.

I did have a friend get rejected by Kinesiology and went to admissions and had them push her application to LSA and was accepted. Just a data point.

If you get deferred from Early action, you can contact the admissions office and transfer your app to another school within umich (but you also have to why michigan essay all over again and send that in). For example, if you get deferred from engineering, you can move your app over to lsa for regular and vice versa (although I’m not sure why would would do that).

@murren She was a transfer student that started here at Michigan this fall. She was rejected from Kinesiology because she didn’t have the correct classes need to transfer into that school or something.
