FWIW, I’m of the opinion that the wording of the deferral letter being a signal to what the eventual decision will be is an urban legend. Correlation does not imply causation
@098123Student such great advice. We just hired a new employee. They both had similar qualification and both interviewed well. The one that sent a follow up email, that was crafted really nice was the one we hired.
My sons school sends in all grades to every school automatically. This makes the kids keep working hard and it’s a better administrative technique for them.
Do what the letter says. If it says don’t send in more stuff they don’t want to hear about new clubs etc you joined or things you won. Sending in a LOCI just shows you are still interested. Make it very short and to the point and send it to your regional school person. Don’t worry if they don’t answer back… At most you will get a template letter and BTW… They are kinda busy now… Lol.
I don’t believe so. But if you include deferred candidates into the same pool as RD, then I think you get a rough idea.
Per the 2018-2019 CDS, UMich received a total of 64,917 (round to 65,000) apps and accepted 14,818 (round to 15,000). If we use the EA figures from last year, 8,000/40,000 being accepted, and assume 100% deferrals or 32,000 move to RD, but I don’t think EVERYONE was deferred) then the remainder 7,000 acceptances divided by 32,000 deferrals plus 25,000 RD apps (or 57,000 apps in the RD round) would mean a RD/Deferral acceptance rate of 12%.
Here’s a big BUT, to my calculation. I don’t think that 12% is really that accurate, because the students who sent their apps in as EA apps will have demonstrated FAR more interest in UMich than the RD crowd, so if you kick out all 25,000 RD apps, and then the 7,000 remaining acceptances are given ALL to the EA deferred apps and if you assume no RD apps are selected (ya, that’s rosy for the deferred), then 7,000/32,000 is 22%.
Then there’s in-state versus OOS and then the various “limited” slots of CoE, Kinesiology, Nusring, LSA, Ross, etc. leftover.
My private college counselor told us that it does make a big difference for out of state students to go visit the school. we are trying to decide if we want to fly out and visit from CA…
Per the CDS, “demonstrated interest” is considered, but it’s not “important.”
We didn’t visit UMich until admitted student day in March 2018 after EA acceptance in December 2017. That’s a sample of one. But I still think if you can, then definitely visit.
@TheFrenchChef same here! i attended a meeting my regional rep held at my school, and obviously applied EA. i think this shows demonstrated interested, but i’m unsure if my attendance to the first meeting was reported, which is a bummer.
I wouldn’t fly across the country to visit but if you are within driving range like an hour or two then yes. I would also try to meet with a faculty or department person and ask questions. Two years ago my OOS son was accepted. He did the tour but met with two heads of departments. He was able to use this in his why Michigan essay. “after meeting and discussing my future at Michigan with Professor xxxx”…
So maybe reach out to a faculty member and ask some questions. Then use that in your LOCI to your regional counselor. Personally this should of been done prior to now.
@Knowsstuff thanks for the input! i don’t live an hour or two away, more like 15 haha. but now knowing that my likelihood of acceptance is somewhere around 12-22% as per @sushiritto is making me think of going the extra (700) mile/s.
probably don’t name drop other schools in your letter of interest for them lol. i dont think the tone of your LOCI would turn out all that well but that’s just imho.
Michigan doesn’t care how much you got. They don’t have to compete for applicants like Lacs have to. If you didn’t know they have like 40,000 applicants with more coming to choose from.
Got deferred from College of Engineering. OOS in Florida.
3.93 UW GPA, 4.5 W GPA.
1470 SAT, 32 ACT
Various EC’s and leadership roles
Solid Essay.
I grew up in Michigan and have been a fan all my life, being deferred hasn’t changed my love for Michigan but it stings a little bit, just thankful to not be rejected (yet). Planning to send mid year grades and whatever else they ask for.
Accepted into UWisc, UMinn, UCF, USF, FIT, and IIT.
The letter on the portal said to send senior grades and that the most successful candidates ONLY send what is asked. Seemed to be saying DONT send a LOCI.
