Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Competitive Piano (I teach some younger students too); Taekwondo (Assistant Instructor); Science Team/Olympiad (Captain); Mock Trial (Lead Witness/Co-Captain); Research at UofSC
Job/Work Experience: Kumon (tutoring)
Volunteer/Community service: Teach elementary Sunday school; tutoring (started tutoring center for STEM students [magnet program at my school])
Summer Activities: Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes (Electrical/Optical Engineering); church mission trip to New Mexico (working with the Navajo)
Essays (rating 1-10, details): uhhhh… good question. I think my essays were okay. For my common app, I wrote about making dumplings and what that has taught me and how it reflects my life. For my activities essay, I wrote about taekwondo. For the Communities Essay, I wrote about my church and how it’s unique (it’s a Chinese church). For the why school or college, I thought it was good because I talked about a certain professor who had research that I was super interested in.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I think this was a strong point on my application. 9 or 10

Teacher Rec #1: My research and seminar teacher. She is amazing and our class is small so she knows us all very well. 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: My APUSH and World History teacher. He told me he talked about my critical thinking skills and how I love making connections between civilizations. I think this rec shows that I’m well rounded and have an open mind. 10/10
Teacher Rec #3: My AP Chem teacher. I’m not really sure about what she wrote, but I did well in her class and according to her current students she still talks about/brags about me (?) so I guess that’s a good thing 8.5/10
Counselor Rec: This one is the one that was probably very generic because I have a new counselor this year who kind of knows me but not that well so…
Additional Rec: Taekwondo Coach. He showed me the recommendation after he submitted it and it really pointed out my interactions with other students and helping others. 9/10
Interview: It was good, but I had to drive like an hour and a half to get to the interview and I was a little tired, but overall it was good. 8/10

IF YOU HAVE LOWER THAN AVERAGE NUMBERS LET MY APPLICATION PROVE THAT MICHIGAN DOES NOT ENTIRELY CARE ABOUT NUMBERS, NOBODY FROM MY SCHOOL HAS GOTTEN IN WITH #S AS LOW AS MINE BUT I SET A NEW LOW…

State (if domestic applicant): OOS, US citizen living overseas
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private, boarding

Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 80k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope

Reflection

Strengths: CommonApp essay, extracurriculars really reflect what I’m interested in, decent number of leadership roles, scores
Weaknesses: lack of awards/kickass extracurriculars, OOS Asian, the community essay, Rec #2, overall “good enough” but not really “super,” if u know what I mean.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: scores were great + my essays and ECs were good, if not super. IMO overall solid app for UMich, although being OOS made me a bit nervous.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
-Accepted: Oxford, Warwick, Edinburgh, King’s college London
-Rejected: Stanford REA
-Waiting on the rest (ivies, UCs, some LACs… the usual college list.), withdrew my UCL app.

General Comments: tbh I wasn’t expecting this at all, after being deferred–getting into Oxford made me forget just about every US college app, and I already knew I wasn’t going to attend UMich, so it wasn’t a REALLY happy moment. Still I’m grateful & wish good luck to everyone waiting for the next wave of decisions!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9 or 10 for all, they were all very honest and i made sure they showed all the qualities I wanted them to know about me.
    Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): 8/10 from my APUSH teacher, it was great at the beginning and he talked about my creativity but it was short and lukewarm towards the end
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): 9/10 (i guess?) I didn’t read this one but it was from my physics teacher, probably good because he liked me
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): (7/10) definitely generic
Additional Rec (if any) (rating 1-10, details): (10/10) From the gifted support teacher (ironic because I’m not in the gifted program), I read it and she talks a lot about my motivation to look for opportunities beyond what my school offers

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Heck yeah
Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): OOS
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Hispanic, Women in STEM

Reflections:
Strengths: SAT scores and GPA, coursework and academic rigor compared to my school. I also think the amount of leadership I had helped and my essays were great.
Weaknesses: I would say lack of accomplishments compared to other applicants. Other than a few common academic awards, I don’t have many accolades, academically or with activities

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably my essays and scores. I really showed that I was a good fit for University. I also think the summer program I did at U-M helped. I’m fairly sure they (unofficially) track demonstrated interest for OOS students
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- MIT, NC State, Purdue (honors college), Penn State; Applied RD to Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Duke

General Comments (if any):
I was really happy when I got in! My advice to future applicants is to really let your personality and life experiences show on your essays. Also, to do your research on the Why UMich essay so they know you’re really interested

How many people here deferred from EA and then accepted? Where can we submit the letter of continued interest after deferred?

Thought I’d copy over from Stanford to help out anyone wanting to see more, especially those who were deferred or are looking to apply in coming years. Please do not post if you don’t have your decision.

National Honor Society and World Language Honors Society for French
Children’s theatre since I was in fourth grade, did seven shows during high school and had supporting roles in all

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App: I talked about being misdiagnosed as nonverbal as a toddler and how conquering that disability helped me discover my passions in theatre; used vivid examples and phonetics, and included how I improvise and have fun with doing the morning announcements (9.5)
Activity: Wrote about working as an assistant costume designer and head dresser. Didn’t have the room to describe in great detail the demands placed on me but the essay stated the message effectively (8)
Community: Wrote about my coworkers at my job at a local specialty deli and how we support each other during the many pitfalls we face; used some vivid details (8.5)
Why Michigan: LOVED the 550 word limit because I could talk about so much, which was very important to me because I applied to dual degrees and had to explain both individually. I talked about specific courses and co-curricular offerings and also talked about how my different interests connect well (9.6)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: My APUSH teacher who is now my AP Gov teacher. We had a rocky relationship at the beginning of my junior year (personality conflicts; I’m very rigid while he is more go-with-the-flow) but after we started talking more we formed an amazing relationship. He also enjoyed my love for theatre and the connections I made with different shows to what we were learning. (8.5)
Teacher Rec #2: My AP Bio teacher from last year. During sophomore year he went up to me in the hall and said how he loved that I always smiled in the halls and how bubbly I was. He enjoyed my humor and the theatre references and recommendations I shared with him. Told me I was one of his most vibrant students that year (9)
Counselor Rec: She has known me since I was a little girl and has always admired me despite my up and downs; I’m pretty sure she included some heartfelt anecdotes (10)
Additional Rec: A director I worked with last year and this year in three professional shows. She is a fantastic writer, so I think she made my achievements and qualities very vivid in her letter (9.5)

Reflection

Strengths: ACT score, most rigorous course load at my high school, extracurriculars are interesting, took advantage of my essays, Legacy
Weaknesses: Community service could’ve been more service oriented, two B’s in high school, didn’t take a million AP classes
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly think that the only reason I got into Michigan was because of my essays. I really put in the effort to make my Why Michigan essay extremely specific and wrote about something untraditional for my community essay. I think admissions really saw my strong interest in Michigan and saw a real person instead of just test scores and a list of activities on paper.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Pitt (Honors and Dean Scholarship), Fordham (Dean Scholarship), Northeastern (Dean Scholarship), UMich. Deferred: Barnard. Waiting on Northwestern, Barnard, Vassar, Wesleyan, and NYU

General Comments: My advice for anyone who has applied yet is to try to keep things to yourself. Don’t get into what other people are doing, or you will start comparing yourself to others and you will get insanely bummed. Do NOT worry about the rankings!!! They don’t tell you what schools are the best because these schools could be schools you don’t belong in. And only apply to schools you are passionate about - it makes the whole process less exhausting and more fulfilling.

Reflection

Strengths: Really good essays and personal statement, really showed my personality.
Weaknesses: ECs I guess but school doesn’t have as many opportunities as schools in the US have. SAT could’ve been better as well.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really I believe my essays and PS stand out among the applicant pool, as well as the language barrier hardship I experienced in my early years.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Still waiting.

General Comments: UMich is really among the many schools that value essays a lot. If you have deficiency in some of your areas, write killer essays and you should have very optimistic chance. Be yourself and take risks in your essays!

Accepted to LSA EA and Ross on 3/1

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1500

SAT II: Math II (750) Bio (750)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
Weighted GPA: 4.2

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I’m lucky to live relatively close to U of M, so I was able to get an internship at Ross over the summer as well as another Ann Arbor startup funded by Ross. I also participated in our school’s top level orchestra for viola, marching band for tuba and jazz band for guitar.

Job/Work Experience: Been working for almost two years now. Started off working at Wendy’s (7 months) then found a job as a busser at a local restaurant.
Volunteer/Community service:

Summer Activities: Same as regular extracurriculars.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I thought my essays were pretty good overall. I wrote about my experience working with drug addicted coworkers and how it inspired me to take school seriously. I also wrote about how music had influenced my life and connected me with my closest friends.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I was relatively close to both my AP Chem and AP US History teacher (Interesting how I ended up getting a 4 in those two classes however…). They were excited to write them and although I didn’t get to see the results, I think they did a good job. I also had my internship lead write me a letter of recommendation that I think really helped.

Teacher Rec #1: AP Chem Teacher (8/10)
Teacher Rec #2: AP US History Teacher (7/10)
Counselor Rec: 8/10
Additional Rec: Internship Lead (10/10)

Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~$80,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
URM, participation in university.
Reflection
Overall I think I really benefited from my close proximity to the school. Being able to participate in activities around campus was in my opinion crucial to my success. If any of you live near any college or campus, I seriously encourage you to just email professors or programs. The worst that happens is that they’re too busy or don’t respond, but you can possibly gain extremely good insight into interested fields of study.
Strengths: ECs, pretty good SAT
Weaknesses: GPA was a bit low but my course load was decent.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think the culmination of strengths I wrote above eventually lead them to believe I was a pretty interested student.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Rejected: MIT
Accepted: UChicago

Waiting on: UC Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton

Although the schools I applied to are extremely prestigious and competitive, I’m super lucky to have gotten such an incredible acceptance from Michigan and will probably end up enrolling in the next month.

If anyone who hasn’t started their college journey is reading, PLEASE just send that random email. You might get a lot out of it.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I thought my essays were okay overall, I could’ve taken more time to write them for sure but I think my Common App essay was better than my U of M specific one. I’d rate my common app essay a 9/10 and my Michigan ones maybe a 6/10.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I was very close with all the teachers that wrote my letters. I was fortunate enough to get a letter from my English teacher who only writes rec letters for 1-2 students a year. He is known for writing some of the best rec letters in our school.
