@calspeed I also have a child there now. As you know they only look at unweighted GPA so I would recalculate it. A=4,B=3…no - /+…but if it’s all “As” then it would be a 4.0… Which is awesome.
I wish you all the luck

Does everyone receive an email of their decision on the (presumed) 18th? I know they send acceptance letters, but ones for deferred/denied?
Hi everybody!
Good luck to all who applied!
Michigan is my first choice as well; I hope to meet some of you as class of 2023!
All decisions get emails. Only acceptances get both email and paper copy acceptance letter with your package from Michigan.
Oh I meant an email not acceptance letter for every type of decision, my bad. Thanks! I guess I won’t have to check my portal a bunch that day—not that I will be, as I will have A BUNCH of midterms to do that week…
On the bright side, family is coming in town on the 18th, so I likely will be more excited than anxious, lol. @Knowsstuff
Good luck to everyone that applied! (: Michigan is my dream school, but I am aware it is super selective.
Good luck to everyone! Can’t wait to (hopefully) meet you all as a part of the class of 2023!
@ThinkOn My niece is a clone of your child and I think her experience was a salutary one. She was waited listed and ultimately rejected by every Ivy she applied to (she applied to 4) and the University of Chicago, while being deferred by University of Michigan. She then made an effort to contact her regional counselor, explaining why specifically she wanted to attend Michigan (she’s interested in foreign languages and so was interested in the Residential College and its intensive language program). She was accepted by Michigan within a couple weeks of contacting her counselor. Afterwards she concluded that she had relied too much on her “stats” and should have shown more initial interest.
I’ve read elsewhere that UM admissions considers a student’s SAT scores relative to the averages for their state and high school. Has anyone else heard/read this, know if it’s accurate or not?
Our daughter has a 4.0 Michigan GPA with 8 AP and 4 Honors courses in one of the highest ranked public schools in NH but has a 1410 SAT: which is on the lower end of UM range but well over the mean scores for both our state and her high school for both Math and ERW.
Wondering if this is the type of thing that would be taken into account as part of a holistic admissions review (?)
You are typically compared to your school /district. But your scores still should be within Michigan’s metrics. OOS is very tough.
Does U Mich offer interviews for EA?
No not for lsa but for engineering yes.
If one is not accepted into the School of Engineering, does their application then get considered for LSA or are they just flat out rejected?
Also, we’ve noticed at our school in past year’s the majority of EA applicants to Michigan are deferred, except the ones that seem to be legacies. But I agree that they don’t really want to hurt their yield so they defer many (not all) top applicants. I also heard that last year they under-accepted and were accepting students off the waitlist well into the summer, so it’ll be interesting if they change how they go about the EA this year, because I would think it is a turn off for some students to be deferred initially, especially because that may cause students to start applying to other schools for RD or even ED 2 in January where they may get accepted - and those schools may be better.
Lastly, I had heard that they had too many kids accept HAIL interviews so they had to apologize and withdraw the opportunity for some, however, we live in a major metropolitan city and my daughter’s interviewer is across the country. Does anyone know why they would not give her someone locally, or why they wouldn’t have just pulled her interview and given it to someone else who is local to that interviewer. We have a huge Michigan alumni network, so I can’t imagine there wasn’t a local alumni to interview her, so it’s a little perplexing and something we were just wondering.
Thanks and Good luck to all!

If you apply to engineering and not accepted then you are done. If you apply to lsa and get accepted you can transfer to engineering. If you get accepted to engineering and decide its not for you, you can transfer to lsa.
Last year Michigan had a large surge of applicants and I think they were not expecting this and were overwhelmed. They truly have a 3 step process and it takes time to holistically review like 65,000, applications. I would think they will be better prepared this year but saying this it seems like everyone gets deferred. Check naviance from your school and college data for chances to get in.
There are multiple studies that being legacy at any school will give you an edge. Why? Well studies show like over 80% of legacy children commit, plain and simple. They can make almost a full class just from the waitlist so don’t think they are worried about not having enough kids. Lots of kids “think” Michigan is a safety for them while applying to the Ivys. They sadly find out this is usually not the case.
Seems like this year they are doing a lot more Skype type of interviews and not as much locally. Not sure why but maybe they have interviewers they really like to use with a good track record? Really don’t know.
There are target states that they use “live” interviews. Chicago is one such example. This is on their website somewhere.
@Knowsstuff That’s ironic that you say target states with “live” interviews and say Chicago is one, because we live in Chicago and the interviewer is not anywhere near here. Clearly something else happened here! My daughter also is surprised she wound up being granted an interview considering others were later told they had couldn’t have one afterall because she forgot about the time change and missed the deadline and went by CST not EST, but it was accepted. There had to be a lot more students that made the deadline and then were turned away for interviews. Regardless, hers will be online. Her person had to reschedule it but was really nice and apologetic.
Our school no longer uses Naviance and they new system they’re using doesn’t have the data updated from prior years. It also didn’t separate kids that applied into Engineering from LSA, etc. so all things being equal my daughter is definitely in the range, however, most kids go into LSA so she doesn’t know where she stands. The “legacy” which they actually had a box for which we laughed was a Grandparent that didn’t graduate due to marriage, so that probably won’t count. There are 3 boys that she knows of that all applied for Engineering and she is a white female so maybe that will help. It is not her first choice or her safety, but is one of her Top 3. She also did not apply ED anywhere. Based on the history of what they do in our school, we’re expecting a deferral. But we’ll know in a few weeks!
Thanks!
@srparent15 I live by Wrigley and it was stated somewhere on the hail interview information on the Michigan website. Don’t read too much into getting an interview or not. It is just your daughter’s way to show interest and that is a good thing. The interviewer fills out some questions about the interview. only the positive gets passed on per se. She should have some questions for the interviewer. Think of like 3 or so. They might not be an engineer so might not be able to answer specific questions FYI. She will be asked “why Michigan” type of questions. They might not have any information on your daughter so it’s a great time for her to talk about herself a bit. It’s always a good idea to ask the interviewer “why” Michigan and find out their likes /dislikes also. My son is in engineering there and the opportunities there seem endless. Good luck.
@knowstuff I think the HAIL interviews are all given by people who went through Michigan Engineering. Since the School of Engineering is the school that does the Hail interviews. Her guy did do engineering there though so we know that much and she was able to find his bio online. She applied for CS which is not what he did, so she knows he won’t be able to answer anything about that.
Thanks!
GPA: 5.2/4 and ACT: 33
