University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

Hey I’m a current freshman who went through the admissions process last year and got accepted EA. I’m also from Ann Arbor so if you have any questions feel free to pm me!

@Nibbatron

On what date did you submit?
When we’re you notified?

Last year’s EA release date was December 20th.

@sushiritto

Thank you!

Does anyone know how much of the Freshman class is filled during Early Action?

This question is irrelevant since EA is not binding. Applicants accepted EA have until May 1 to decide whether to enroll or not.

I’ll disagree with Brantly.

Someone who appeared to work for UMich admissions last year stated that almost 8,000 were accepted from almost 40,000 EA applications. And UMich accepted a total of 15,468 applications. So roughly 50% of acceptances came via EA. I’m sure UMich has a good idea of both their EA and RD yields.

FWIW, my OOS kid submitted their app on 10/31 and was accepted on 12/20.

The question was how much of the class is filled via EA. This is a question that’s typically asked about ED. For example, many highly selective schools fill 40-50% of the freshman class via ED. It is a hard-and-fast number because ED is binding. Students applying RD to those schools know that only X number of spots are available.

Students accepted to UMich EA do not have to commit until May 1. They can still apply to other schools and likely have applied to other schools EA. General advice to applicants is to apply EA to every college on their list that offers it. The spots are not “filled” until the students, who likely have other choices, commit. In contrast, ED schools KNOW for a fact that X number of seats are taken.

Even though the schools don’t truly know till May, there is a pretty good estimate of how many kids will accept per year for EA. This seems to be around 50% give or take. This seems to be the trend for most schools as of late. I find it interesting that people actually want to know this number anyway. It shouldn’t stop anyone from applying. Like people are going to try to calculate their chances at each school. It is what it is. Apply early and hope for the best but knowing that it seems like everyone gets deferred . My OOS son found out like first week January… So now I am confused when he applied 2 years ago… Ha…

It’s no different from the good estimate of how many will accept an RD acceptance. It’s all part of the complex dance of enrollment management. Still not the same as the seats-filled, checks-cashed ED round. That is what is meant by “how much of the freshman class is filled.”

50+% of the acceptances are “handed out” in EA at UMich. UMich knows their yield +/- and knows which high schools around the country produce the highest yield. For example, at my kid’s HS here in CA, UMich is a very popular choice (high yield) per Naviance. Input/output, it’s not rocket science.

Hi all!! I’m a freshman at Umich right now!! I hope to help you all with any questions you may have about the campus, college life, or even college apps. Colleges care very much about who you are and how you will fit into campus WAY beyond test scores. As this thread grows, please don’t be discouraged by people posting seemingly higher stats than you!!

@BigRoundDad I am living on the hill this year! I love it because it’s a little bit removed from central campus and beautiful. There are positives and negatives to living on central campus and on north campus as well. No matter where you live, I think you’ll have a great experience.

I live in Couzens Hall on Central Campus, and I love it! It’s next to the medical research buildings, so I can walk to the lab I do research easily. Also, it’s next to Mojo and not far from North Quad for food.

If I just sent my scores in today, will they receive it before November 1st?

@dustybender99

Is this the first time you’re sending scores to them?

@ChicagoSportsFn

Yes

Is anyone here not a domestic applicant?

Re: official documents submitted via Coalition App

S19’s Coalition App dashboard had all boxes checked for required official documents, but Wolverine Access still showed “Not Submitted” for Academic & Counselor Recs. Turns out the recommendations were started, but not complete. Simple email to counselor and teacher fixed that, now everything’s submitted and waiting for Wolverine Access to update. Whew!

Just didn’t want anyone applying EA to see the check boxes in the Coalition App and think WA just needs to be updated.

@dustybender99

There’s a blog on the Michigan admissions website dated August 1, 2017. It’s over a year old but I doubt it’s changed for this year:

“Test scores from the October ACT with writing or SAT with Essay tests will not arrive in time for Early Action. However, if you’ve previously taken the test and are taking it again in October, you can send in your previous scores to complete the application and forward the new scores to U-M once they are available.”

I don’t know if the score you sent is from the October testing date but you sent it last week which is roughly the time October testing results could have been sent.

If it does get to Michigan by November 1, then it’ll be very close.

My DD took the ACT on July 14. She saw her scores online o/a July 24. Score was good so she sent to a bunch of schools. The earliest the score got to one of her school was July 31 which was a week later. The latest arrival to a school was late August.

So if you send your scores October 18, then it can take as short as a week and get to Michigan by October 25 with plenty of time to spare.

Like the blog stated, if you sent in a previous score and they received (say like a month ago), then your app would be considered “complete” but can be updated with scores that come after November 1.

How do I know if my application qualifies for early action?
