University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

The decision will come out Wednesday December 19th at 3 pm ET.

oof, is anyone else’s portal down?

@br_te1000000 I think you have a good chance! I applied to nursing as well so hopefully we will be future classmates!

In the case of deferral, would it be beneficial to write a letter of continued interest to my regional admissions counselor?

@mezric11… Yes!

The portal down doesn’t mean anything. There are hours of operation which is why the portal won’t be working sometimes.

@haost23 people keep talking about their portal being down or different boxes on their portal, is there anything like this that can give a clue to admissions?

The portal being down won’t give any clue. I’m not sure what you mean by there being different boxes.

Does anyone agree that Umich’s portal is not the best?

I agree. I feel like it’s not very easy to use compared to the other schools I applied to. It’s super confusing lol

Does anyone know how much your major ‘interest’ factors into admissions? Does it at all? I think one of our main advantages is applying as a History major, with the supporting course work, AP Scores, Essay and Letter of Rec. However I’m worried that because we don’t apply as a history major (under interested majors we selected History and Computer Science) - it won’t be much of a factor in admissions.

It seems like major interest does at least factor a little into admissions. For reference, this is how they grade each applicant.

You can find this on their admissions website.

This is just my opinion as a parent that went through the cycle for the Class of 2022, but there’s obviously going to be a substantial difference in terms of admissions when applying for/to Nursing, Kinesiology, CoE, Ross, LSA, etc. Within LSA, I don’t believe your area of major interest matters much, if at all. I remember hearing a statistic that somewhere around 75-85% of LSA freshman change their major at least once during their 4 years.

@sushiritto thank you for the valuable insight. If you don’t mind me asking, what day was your child’s admission decision released last year, and do you think this Wednesday at 3 is a reasonable prediction?

Last year’s EA admissions release was Wednesday 12/20 at 3:00 PM EST. I believe that EA release this year will be the same Wednesday (12/19), same time. My belief is based on a post by someone who I think is an admissions “insider,” @SingingBusDriver.

@haost23 thank you for that link! very interesting. Reading it seems like maybe we’d have a chance - shouldn’t get my hopes up as admission is still very unlikely…

I think your major affects your admission in the sense that the admission officers try and look at you in the context of studying whatever program you choose, but I don’t think any one major is “less” selective than others. The University of Michigan is highly competitive, regardless of the program.

If the results indeed come on 19th at 3PM, @SingingBusDriver will be elevated to a cult status :). Just curious. I got admitted in UIUC as well and have tracked that forum closely, but, why is UMich alone having 31 pages of user comments? Why is this college seeming so important for so many? Cant find a reason - population / application…

@aerospaceenthusiast… Simply because it’s Michigan!

If you follow some of the threads on UIUC Penn State, Ohio State you will see how hard it is to get accepted here compared to these other schools. All fine schools.

I won’t go into world class research university, amazing helpful alumni, great sports and getting better. High intellectual students and a great campus overall. It’s the overall culture.

If you compare the GPA avg of the LSA students which is 3.8. That is good enough to get into the schools I mentioned engineering programs. Engineering here avg is 3.93.

Congrats on UIUC.

For us, Michigan is a much bigger reach than UIUC and overall a more desirable school for multiple reasons…
