University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

Students admitted ED to any college are required by the ED contract they and their guidance counselors signed to withdraw all other applications.

By when? Because, what happens in the case where financial aid doesn’t work out and the student cannot proceed with their ED school?

My kid is just one OOS kid, who applied EA with high stats and was accepted EA. We didn’t submit an ED app to anywhere though.

When the student accepts the ED offer. Usually the deadline is about three weeks after admission notification, so around beginning of January. Very, very tiny proportion of ED admittees do not enroll.

My kids fit the profile of an OOS high stats student who applied to Michigan EA. Both applied to an HYPS restricted early action school which allows concurrent EA applications to state schools, which given the limited nature of schools they could apply to early, took advantage of this opportunity at Michigan. I’m curious to see how this will play out for my kids (5’s on their AP’s, perfect PSAT, near perfect SAT, 800’s on SAT II…)

Just for fun, this is exactly what my EA decision looked like last year(except for the “My Name” part). I received the email on December 20, 2017,10;43pm (PST). Good luck to each one of you trying EA for the Class of 2023. As unlikely as it may seem, I hope all of you get accepted.

And Michigan knows this, which is EXACTLY why they hedge their bets, deferring many applicants they have a hunch have applied SCEA/REA to HYPS. Since the SCEA/REA applicants can only apply to public universities EA, the most common are Michigan, UNC-CH, UVA, and Berkeley. And their own state flagship, if it’s not one of those.

@ThinkOn My OOS kid, similar stats, applied EA to both UMich and SCEA/REA to ONE of HYPSM and was accepted EA to UMich, not deferred. Only so many seats for OOS butts and thus there are lots of deferrals. @brantly may be right, but UMich didn’t sniff out my kid or they read her app and took a chance. :-??

Did your kid get in SCEA/REA? @sushiritto

@brantly Exactly, they know. Will be interesting to see if the “Tufts Syndrome” is alive and kicking there. But believe me, would love to be in a position come Dec. 15th-ish to not test this by making a call to Michigan to withdrawal their applications.

My dd’s perfect stat valedictorian was deferred last cycle and then wait listed. My daughter as well (Not the perfect stat part but very competitive). According to Naviance, they would have been accepted in previous years based on stats. OOS COE.

Does anyone know if applying to a school like LSA versus engineering would make my chances different in getting in?

@momofsenior1 i’ve definitely heard a lot about very competitive candidates being deferred by Michigan EA, still not really sure why that is the case.

@emilyleee123 It’s called “yield protection.” Colleges do not want to admit applicants who they suspect will not enroll.

Is anyone else’s application status still Early Action - Requested? I swear I submitted my application well before November 1st 11:59 pm

And on wolverine access on the Application Status page, it says that my application date is November 2nd… so I’m just so paranoid rn.

Im in the same boat

I was in the same boat. Although I submitted my application two days prior to the deadline, the portal still indicates that I submitted only a day prior. It also says my transcript was submitted on 11/02, after the deadline. I just received an email confirming my application status as an EA applicant: perhaps they’re sending emails by date applied, so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Ahh I see thank youu
Also I didn’t enter my social security number in my common app but apparently it’s required if I’m applying for financial aid via FAFSA… which I did… should I email the admissions office about it?

@ryuu29 your application should be complete or it can be held up. Email them now and move forward. To those with questions about when you submitted Vs when they received your application. Email or call admissions and then you will know.

@ryuu29 I did the same thing - submitted without ss#. I still was accepted/admitted. However, as I waited for my final financial aid info, it never showed up because the university had no ss# to match the FAFSA too. I ended up scrambling at the last minute to get things in order. So make sure you check with the financial aid department as soon as you are accepted to move the process forward. Best of luck!
