University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

I’m in the same situation as @22blue: interested about my status as well.

me too^^ and my test scores were received on november 2, so i am really worried

Me as well… except for some reason it says that my application date is 11/02/18, even though I submitted it on the 1st at like 5 PM PST. Is this something I should be worried about/contact the admissions office for?

which school did you apply to? LSA?

Yes I applied to LSA!

When will decisions be released?

Most info is speculative, but somewhere between Dec 19 and 21 is where it has been in years past.

Yes, generally the end of the week before they close for the winter/holiday break.

I’ve heard from past admissions that Michigan defers a lot of top applicants for early action - has anyone heard the same? Why do they do it?

Also I’ve heard that EA results are generally out the week before Christmas on a Wednesday or Friday?? Does anyone know if this is true

From my post #65, UMich EA decisions for the last 7 years:

Yes, why would they do that? There’s no reason to do it. And it wasn’t the case for my kid last year.

I noticed that something changed on my financial aid area on my online application. The “Financial Aid Award Notice”" used to be blank and now it has one entry. it says

Aid Year Institution Description
2020 University of Michigan Financial Aid Year 2019-2020

It doesn’t have a link to it. Do you guys have the same?

@Goose15 It means they have created a folder for your financial aid if you have completed your FAFSA/CSS. This is where you will check for status/documents moving forward. Final financial aid awards come out following the May acceptance dates once tuition prices for the upcoming year are set - so items in there can change several times.

@sushiritto, Michigan does have a reputation for deferring top OOS EA applicants. One theory is that UM admissions knows that many of these OOS applicants apply ED to Ivies or other top 15 schools. Michigan does not want to accept these applicants in December only to find out that they were admitted to their ED school. It’s a yield protection strategy. UVa and other schools accomplish the same thing by waiting until mid January to issue EA decisions.

^^^This is correct. A lot of OOS EA applicants apply to Michigan as a safety. That’s why there’s a lot of confusion among top-stats EA applicants who are deferred.

@dtrain1027 It’s a good theory, but was NOT the case for my OOS kid in last year’s admissions cycle.

Let’s say UMich defers a top OOS applicant and these top OOS students do get into their Ivies, then do these top OOS students actually withdraw their UMich applications before EA deferred decisions begin in late January/early February? I sincerely doubt it, maybe a few.

Michigan has a pretty strong yield without artificially trying to improve it with ED. If Michigan were truly trying to protect its yield, they all would be denied. Perhaps not all these high stat OOS students put the time into their essays?

The bottom line is that the UMich admission blog stated that there were almost 40,000 EA applicants (total apps were almost 66,000), a 20-25% increase over the prior year. The only have so many seats to put butts into during EA, especially from OOS, thus many have to get deferred period. You can’t fill up your entire class with OOS students during EA. And let’s not forget that 54% of last year’s class were in-state students, who get priority.

Apparently most of my materials were received 11/4…what’s my fate

I’m so scared will I even be considered now?

My materials were received on 11/3 but I knew I sent everything by 11/1 and today my status just changed to “Early Action- Qualified.” As long as you’re sure that all of your materials were sent by 11/1 then you should be fine.
