@Missss sorry about that. Unless you join a learning community they just assign you. My son didn’t join any learning community. He didn’t like the groups /or clubs so he started his own with another student and the tech group had really taken off. They have weekly meetings. He /they are putting on their first conference this April.
Just get involved in stuff you like. My son also plays flag football and softball intermural. You can do just about anything you want. You will find like minded kids and go from there.
@naturelover757. When you visited here did you happen to notice the over abundance of stores, restaurants and shops surrounding you on central campus? There is just about any type of food that you could want. From my son’s perspective the food is good overall with many choices, in the cafeterias .
Campus day is up to you. If cheap enough for you to come, sure, but if you have already committed and you know your coming to Michigan, I would save the money.
@Missss I am actually a parent but we liked Campus Day a lot. My daughter is still waiting on responses from a few schools but Michigan is one of her top choices. She was apprehensive about a few things and I think Campus Day made her feel better and she’s starting to see how she might fit in there. I agree with @Knowsstuff - it’s totally optional. If you’re on the fence, it’s not a bad idea if you can make it work. Though we’ve been on campus a few times this was the first time we really met with the folks from my daughter’s major. If you’re already committed to Michigan it’s less important - unless you just want the “swag”.
@PrdMomto1 Thanks. Glad to know your daughter had a positive experience. I’ll try to go to campus day if my parents can fit it in their schedule. I figured you must be a parent after looking at your username again, my mom uses a very similar one!
Eating in the dining hall everyday, the food will get “old.” The quality is good with varied choices from different ethnicities. Off-campus, you pretty much have everything you would have in a big city. Indian, Korean, Japanese, Sushi, burgers, salads, sub shops, ramen, pretzels, Chinese, Thai, Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wings, Panera Bread, blah, blah, blah…
For us, Campus Day was our first visit to campus, so we went, but if you’ve seen campus and visited Ann Arbor, you could miss it and be fine. It’s pretty rah rah and they’ll get you prepared for singing “Hail To The Victors” a lot. Michigan may also have a party in your local area, probably at a current student’s house, where they host new students with food and drink and regale you with more “Hail To The Victors.” :))
Do you meet a lot of new friends during Campus Day, or is it mostly for you and your parents to visit the school and become more familiar with the opportunities there?
I’d say it’s more for you and your parents to learn more about the school. You get to see inside a dorm, some buildings like the Law Quad, The Diag, Central Campus, dining hall, etc.
Hear stories like if you step on the M on the Diag, you have to run naked at midnight from end of campus to the other in a minute or you will be cursed forever. :))
Campus day is a rah, rah session to get you guys to commit and to impress your parents so you commit. If you live close then go. If it costs you money to go there and your selecting Michigan anyway then don’t. Different dining halls have slightly different food. My son ate at South Quad and states they have the best overall food. He is happy with the overall quality of the food. But yes, sometimes you can use your Blu bucks or cash /credit card and go enjoy yourself. If you can’t find food you like to eat your not looking hard enough.
The one thing that I can remember about Campus Day was the tour taking us to eat at Mosher Jordan (MoJo), which is on The Hill across from Central Campus accessible via a small bridge over local traffic. I’m a picky eater and I couldn’t find anything that I liked that day. So I sat down with the group of other families eating a PB&J. And I’m essentially Paleo. :))
@sushiritto I would like to suggest a modification to your route to the stadium from central campus on gameday for those who haven’t experience this yet:
Take State Street (or Division) south to Hoover St and head west on Hoover to Revelli Hall.
There, the Michigan Marching Band Drumline performs a ~15 minute stepshow about 90 minutes before kickoff. Following the stepshow, the whole band emerges from Revelli Hall for a march to the stadium starting about 55 minutes before kickoff. Quite a sea of humanity follows the band as they play their way to the stadium!
The schedule for every home game is posted on the MMB Twitter feed the morning of game day with the schedule.
For those who don’t know what the Drumline stepshow is, checkout this snippet of a previous year’s performance:
@ckd022. Yes… It’s fun and we ran into them last year. I would do it once for the experience but now I will know there’s a schedule to miss them next year… Lol.
@sushiritto since you are a huge UofM sport fan - how is it to get tickets to games? (football, basketball, and soccer)? Is there a website to buy tickets in advance? Is it different for the students vs. their relatives to get tickets? is getting season tickets a good idea or a waste of money? Anything you can share is greatly appreciated!
Get season tickets as a student. $185 for all home games for football. There are website for this and Google is your friend…) :…that is a steal!? . My son won’t get me students tickets so we just by from stubhub or the like. Football and Basketball sells out quickly.Major games it can be $100 /ticket. Once you get the link sent to you to buy tickets… Do so. Soccer I don’t know much about.
