University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

Thanks!

I don’t quite understand how scholarship works. Does it need to be applied or is it being considered automatically for engineering? Not hearing anything by now will mean no scholarship I suppose.

Also, bumping up the question about learning communities. Is it worth it to apply? What is available for engineering freshmen? I read the web page but have a hard time understanding. Are there obligations to live in one of the communities?

@misss both. Some are automatic and some you have to apply to. The website should explain it or call the office number. They are helpful. No obligation to live in a learning community and you really do have to read and see what interests you. Just because your engineering doesn’t mean you can’t join another type of learning community. But this might fit an engineering type :https://housing.umich.edu/themes/innovation/

I’m going to have to take the counterpoint to my esteemed colleague @Knowsstuff , especially after jinxing the Big10 championship. :-j

If you’re on a Keto diet, then Zingerman’s is great, because then you don’t care about your fat intake. :))

Also, you’ll either have a very long walk or an Uber ride to get to Zingerman’s from Central Campus. I’d offer up the following places that the students seem to frequent, which are Fred’s, Amers or Sava’s. And for good a cafe/coffee, where the beans are vacuumed thru a tube from one side of the cafe to the barista, go to Expresso Royale. And they have a great selection of beans, like Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain.

Honestly, there are so many bars, cafes, restaurants around campus that just walking the South University, South Main and State Street areas you’ll likely see many places that will appeal to you and your family.

Lastly, as a sports fan, just visiting the Big House is nearly a religious experience, similar to visiting a Wrigley Field or Fenway Park or ND Stadium with Touchdown Jesus hovering over the stadium. And also take look inside the Intramural Building, which has been remodeled. It’s huge and has several levels of equipment, rooms and courts for basketball and handball/squash or whatever.

@Knowsstuff Thank you! I hope to get more info during campus day regarding living communities. The thing I worry most is about making friends and getting support to navigate such a big school, I’m wondering if living in a community will help with that.

Thanks! I will visit the Big House as I have been a huge college football fan for many years and that place is like Mecca to me.

You have to imagine walking to the stadium via South Main Street and literally for a 1/2 mile or more, on South Main itself as well as the side streets leading up to the stadium, all types of pre-game indoors/outdoors parties, both Greek and non-Greek. Most of the town shuts down and 111,000 fans proceed to fill up the stadium.

@sushiritto… Not me but someone forgot to guard MQu3 in the corner. You would think after the 5th 3 they would put someone like glue on him. Last few minutes were very loud!

@Missss. You will be fine. To meet people say “Hi” and introduce yourself, sit next to people and talk and join groups /clubs. You will also meet people in your dorms.

Congrats Xuedingedemao. My daughter is OOS and got admitted during EA. She did not get any grant/scholarship, just loans. I am curious about your family financial stats. Can you share if you are ok?

Thanks, dspak77

@Missss Check out the UMich amdissions blog, lots of good info on Living Communities and transitioning to college:

Bottom line, the transition with or without joining a Living Community or Honors may be difficult and take a month or two or even more. My kid decided against Honors or Living Communities, just wanted to be part of general population of students.

@dspak77 you might want to pm the person since it’s personal information but lots of things would go into the reason your seeking. You can’t just compare one wage VS another.

@Knowsstuff Thanks. Since I am a newbie, how do I do “pm the person”? I will probably ask for other stat as well.

@Knowsstuff @sushiritto Thank you! Are all engineering classes on north campus? Do they assign all engineering students on that campus? I’m excited and scared at the same time.

@Knowsstuff has a CoE student. My kid is LSA. Your math classes will be held on Central Campus, specifically either Weiser or East Hall. If you have any science classes, they’ll likely be held on Central too. I think freshman can be placed to live anywhere, Central, Hill or North Campus, but @Knowsstuff would know more about engineering students.

Don’t be. You will be fine. I can answer this fully when I get home. I have a good group to join for instant female engineers also

@Missss. OK now stuck in traffic…

Look into this :https://lsa.umich.edu/wiserp

You can live anywhere you would like to. First year all but like one classes is on Central campus since you take all your classes(math, science, English, humanities) with the general population so with LSA, med students etc. There is like one engineering centric class you take on North campus.

But as a sophomore, if you met the prerequisites, all your engineering classes will be on North campus but you can live on central or get an apartment etc. My son was on central his first year and he is on North in a campus apartment and he likes it. It’s very quite on North campus and you can see deer in the morning on your way to class.

@sushiritto Thanks for the links! Very good read and helpful!

@Knowsstuff Thank you for the info! This helps a lot! So do you get to choose where you live or they assign you randomly? I’m a male engineer, this is my mom’s account  Did your son join any learning communities?

We were just there for Campus Day and they told us you have pretty much no say in where you live. You can request a type of room but not a specific dorm.

I see. That would make sense, but able to request type of room is nice. How was campus day? Is Mich your first choice?
