University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

@Knowsstuff. Thanks for your input. Let me try to explain my situation. Not much in 529. If we really try to come up with the money (without really touching retirement or mortgage), it won’t easy but probably can with other options. First, my wife can get a job. Second, my D can get work while studying. But the question is “Is it worth it to attend UMich over NJ state?” I am old school. I value brand name of university like some people do. If she gets a good paying job after graduation, I would probably not regret it.

@J123D123. Thanks for sharing. Yes, we are waiting for a scholarship to come through as well. It will make it easier. Good luck to you.

Not sure if this helps… but for anyone wondering about scholarships I received a department scholarship from the school of nursing today. Good luck to anyone still waiting to hear!

Work while studying…

One school gave D18 a package with $4,000 work study. The state minimum wage there is like $7. So about 20 hours per week. Way too much IMO. Another school gave around $2000 work study and the state minimum wage is around $12 per hour so like 6 to 7 hours per week. That is acceptable…

U of M didn’t give any work study so merit would easily put U of M right at the top of consideration all around and an easy choice. Great school. Best program of study PPE of all her other options {( second best option there is UVA with its PPL option ) UV’s grant and merit package is the least friendly however }. She knows people who go to U of M already making the transition easier. Great area geographically. Great Mock Trial Team.

The Best is Yet to Come

So we wait patiently…

Work Study or getting a job in school would be like $3,000-4000 max. My son’s at Michigan and works like 10 hours a week. Keep on mind Michigan is a very difficult school. Depending on her major she might be able to get 2 internships during her 4 years
If stem she might get decent pay to contribute. You can look into paid coop for pay also.

Michigan is awesome in every way but your talking about $280,000. Minus her $27,500 max loans. =$252, 500

Vs instate school of $120,000-$27,500 =$97, 5000

Only you can find value in it. No one else can answer that question for you.

If you can cleanly pay for the instate school and she ends her schooling with no debt… I would take that deal everyday.

@J123D123. My son found a job working for Michigan within 10 minutes. Makes like $9.75 /hour. You don’t need work study. They treat it that way though. He can work as much or as little as he wants to. Around midterms and finals there is no work, if you need to study. There is a website for this somewhere.

@Knowsstuff. Really appreciate the heads-up. May the work study is not good option then. I would like her to do internships. How is paid coop work?

You need to call or email her department of her major and ask. The above is just an example. They can answer your questions.

Also Michigan is very tough academically. . Don’t think she can work a lot of hours. Something like 10 hours would be reasonable. It’s more like extra spending money then paying off loans.

Have another talk with financial aid. Let them know you want her to go there but you need help finding a way. Maybe there is something they are not seeing. I would call this week.

To date, I had several contacts including one face-to-face meeting and many email contacts. I told them I can meet the EFC from the net price calculator but we would need help with 25K. Only advice is they gave me is to get a private loan such as PLUS. I will call them but not sure what can I tell them?

I’m not sure how they decide scholarships over time. The message I have out of LSA is they will go out this week. So based on that I’m guessing no one has a difinitive answer yet on scholarship money who is/are accepted into the LSA school.

Anyone else here with difinitive LSA scholarship feedback could with some clarity going forward if your experience with LSA differed from the belief that you haven’t recurved any LSA Scholarship Decision and you too anticipate info this week.

This does not include grants and loan aid which has gone out. I’m talking scholarship offers specifically.

Ok so LSA Scholarships have started to go out in batches.

Some today and some tomorrow and likely a third set into next week. So if you applied to LSA for a scholarship and you haven’t heard already then nows the time.

Also Honors notifications by the 23rd

Best of Luck

That’s what happens when I text with my big fingers without my readers on…

Yikes

@J123D123
Thank you! I assumed they’d come out in batches, since that’s how Umich seems to do things. Wasn’t sure of the exact time frame.
Haven’t heard back today so I’m assuming I missed this batch. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!!
(Then again, I JUST updated my financial aid stuff and sent in a medical expense form, so they may not give me it until the last batch haha)

do we know what time the batches are released?

No…

Later today was the expression used so guessing at the end of each day. Maybe as late as 7:00 PM.

Good Luck

Do they send you an email? I have nothing yet

^ actually got an email rejected from four year renewable scholarship

Received an email with an acceptance around 4:30 today if that helps anyone

Does anyone know if honors program students can attend the June 19th (start date) student orientation session? My son is waiting to hear back from honors, so as of now he was given a list of LSA orientation dates. He doesn’t want to sign up, then get into honors and find out he should have picked different dates.

Ok D18 received an email response today on her scholarship consideration. U of M didn’t offer nearly enough of a package to even weigh or consider the Fall of 2019. U of M came in at $18,000 greater than UVA per year.

Good Luck Everyone…
