My son was admitted to both, with the definitive financial advantage going to UM (we are in state). He will probably study English and Economics. The lure of an OOS school appeals to him. The financial package NYU offers does not appeal to me. It seems both schools have similar stats. Any insight?
OOS schools ALWAYS appeal to students. NYU is not worth the extra $.
NYU is absolutely NOT worth paying significantly more than Michigan…
Tell him tough luck. He’ll get over it.

These two schools are so different, but your son is extremely blessed to live in a state with such an excellent public university. As the others have said, NYU is not worth the extra money.
I would say NYU is inferior to UMich in basically everything, especially if you consider the money. The only practical reasons I see choosing NYU over UMich would be NYU Stern vs UMich non-Ross or if the prospective student was a master thespian.
“…or if the prospective student was a master thespian.”
You obviously are unaware that Michigan has a conservatory level music, theater, and dance school. It’s one of the best in the country. NYU does match Michigan in a few departments.
Another vote for UM. They are very different as NYU has no campus, no sports etc. I’d vote for the cheaper, traditional college experience at UM and then he can always go to a place like NYU for grad school.
I have to second everyone else’s reaction. In most respects, UMich is a better and more academically challenging school than NYU and I can’t see paying more for NYU.
@rjkofnovi I was unaware, my apologies. My point was that I thought NYU would be a practical option for thespians since its program is great (like UMich’s) and all the Broadway productions are literally right there. However, I will admit I have little knowledge in this area, so who am I to judge? Either way, I would choose UMich over NYU in almost any circumstance.
