Hey guys, I am a transfer student from a community and I got into Umich LSA, I’ll be an incoming junior this fall semester. I am taking an intro CS course, Calc 1, and an elective. I am worried that I won’t be able to handle the workload. I had a 3.8 at my community college and I would say I’m an average math student, I also have no prior programming experience. Although, I am willing to put in a plethora of hours into school. Is it as difficult as they say it is? will I be able to handle it? Any tips? Thank you.
Did you speak to an academic advisor? It seems like you will have to stay at Michigan for another 3-4 years or so based on your progress towards the CS major.
It’s gonna take about 3 years, but I’m not really concerned about that part. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to handle the workload. @yikesyikesyikes
I am guessing your intro class is EECS 183? You are taking a relatively easy first semester compared to what you will see in the future - you should be fine as long as you are proactive. The big pitfall in EECS are people falling behind or not getting started early enough for projects or studying for exams. Start early, stay ahead, and go to office hours even if you are doing well. I know that is generic advice, but I wish I had done that earlier. Do the same with math and quantitative courses in general.
This is actually a light schedule but a good way to start michigan. Not sure why you are so worried? Yes it’s harder then CC or high school. As suggested stay on top of everything and use your resources. There is peer to peer help for math and I think cs. Go to these. Use your study groups. Talk to learning resources tomorrow to setup realistic ways to study. You can do this.
Thanks @Knowsstuff ! Tomorrows my first day of class, I’m going to do my best. Again, thanks for the advice.
@yikesyikesyikes Thanks for your advice! I’m going to do everything you said.
