University of Michigan Honors Program Essay

For the UMichigan Honors Program, they want me to send in an essay. One of the essays says I can take any question/problem (political, social, ehtical, religious, or scientific) that has troubled and or engaged me within the past year. They say they don't want to get an essay on an argument in support of one position.

The question I have is: can I talk about any hot topic issues like abortion, creationism, the war in Iraq, etc.?

I want to write an essay on any of these hot topic issues and discuss why both sides have troubled me and made me think. You guys think I can write about them or will I offend someone?

You won't offend anyone by writing an essay on one of those issues if they ask for a "political question/problem". THe only problem is that a bunch of people are going to be writing on that stuff, so you want to be a little more unique. If one of them really hits close to home or has affected you in a very special and individual way, you should totally write about that, but if you're just going to write an essay about how "both sides make you think" your essay is going to be seen as weak. They want something personalized that means a lot to you.

sorry to steal this thread, but chilibears..do you know how long it takes to find out if you get into the honors program? I was invited to submit an essay the first week in janury and sent it in on 1/10. Thanks!

I got on honors invite on January 20th. I never wrote the essay, but I was asked to send in the essay probably mid to late december. So, it took about a month.
