I was curious to know if Michigan held regional auditions in San Francisco?

i was wondering on the dorm condition at Michigan....does anybody know?

Does anyone know if all of the questions are required?
I'm assuming that you answer all of the essay questions. Just checking to see if there is a choice. It seems a little unclear because there is a question aimed only at perf. arts students.

My D just finished the UM application. You need to answer several essay prompts. The first one all applicants to the university must answer. It is about "what would you as an individual bring to our campus community?" (250 words) then the School of Music applicants need to answer "How would you discuss the centrality of the arts in society...". (250 words) Next, you need to answer one of the longer essay questions (there are three choices)(500 words). My D answered the "Discuss an issue of local, national or international concern" question. Then for the actual School of Music you'll need to write another essay to bring to the audition (my D wrote hers already while she was in the essay writing mode! It is about a significant experience which influenced you in your MT life (don't remember the exact wording, but the question is on the school of music part of the website). Hope that helps! Good luck!

Thanks for the swift reply! That is very helpful.

I have a son that is a jr in MT at UM He lived in a dorm his freshman year. Michigan is divided into several campus areas. The Music school to include a brand new building that will house the MT dept is located on North Campus. Most of the academic classes are taken on the Central Campus. He lived on North Campus in a double that shared a bathroom. It was fine and he used the bus system to get around.

Is it possible on the application for "MT" students to choose the "Theater" auditions?
I couldn't access MT dates for the NY Unifieds on the application, although I believe U of M. will be at the unified. Buuuut(!) the Unified dates for Ny are not listed under the MT audition dates, only the Theater audition dates! RRrrgh! Anybody have any info on this?

I called today, and apparently, U of M. will not be at the unified for MT, only theater. Therefore to auditon for them for MTY, you have to choose an Ann arbor, Chicago or Ny date. Anybody know anything different?

Tashmu, I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are asking. But from the UM website, these are the dates and locations for MT auditions. It appears that UM is auditioning in NY, but not during unifieds. Some schools do this. I know Syracuse has auditioned in NYC in the past also, but not as part of unifieds. Hope that helps.

Thank you, Dancemom, I was just very surprised that the unified auditions would have theater auditions, not MT.

From my friend nydancemom's post above, it appears that the MT auditions are during the Chicago unified dates.

Just wanted to let you all know that during the November audition weekend a MUSKET production (student run, similar to GAP shows at NYU) of Singin' in the Rain will be performed. And the female lead is none other than our own Theatermom's D!!! You can buy tickets beginning on October 19th by calling the Michigan Union ticket office at 734-763-8587. Another one of the leads is the boy who was the original JoJo in Seussical on Broadway when he was younger! Sounds like fun!

The Boy lead is Andrew Keenan-Bolger. Great guy.

Can anyone post the dates of Singin' in the Rain? My D and I are visiting Ann Arbor and the school in early November and seeing "The Pursuit of Persephone," which is a new musical. But it would be terrific if we could see two shows while we are there.

NMR
I believe Singin' in the Rain is only on the audition weekend which is Nov. 17, 18, and 19.

Congrats to theatremom's daughter!!! How wonderful!! I wish I lived closer to see that production. Break a leg!!!! :)

NMR I hope you have your tickets for Pursuit as I am pretty sure it is sold out. I may have 1 extra for Sat Matinee if you need it. Pursuit is about the life of F. Scott Fitzgerals and his time at Princeton.

Pioneer HS is preforming High School Musical that weekend as well. Disney choose them to be the first to perform it on the stage. Michigan MTs make up most of the production team, which is another wonderful opportunity that is available in Ann Arbor.

I know that at some schools, musical theater majors cannot audition for straight plays, and the straight actors cannot be in the musicals. How does this work at UMich? And do the straight drama and musical theater programs overlap -- say, in acting classes - the way I hear they do at CMU?

NMR-
In the core classes the two majors do not overlap- I have known that MTs have been cast in straight plays and in Operas. In the 3 years my son has been there I have not known that anyone but an MT was cast in a musical. I will ask my son about classes overlapping for you but my 1st thought is that they do not.
