Hey can all the U of M Acceptees and waitlisters come on here so we can just see what the deal is, where people are going, what you are thinking, etc. I have:

Accepted: Northwestern, NYU ( with 20,000 scholarship), USC, BoCo, Webster, U of Miami, UCI, UCSD
Waitlisted: Univ of Mich, CMU

U of M is my absolute first choice so lets see of we can’t keep the info coming!

Wow, with all the new "splinter" threads, it makes it tricky choosing which one to post on! But I'll use this one as it directly relates to UM and any of you who are going there next year might enjoy hearing about one of the things that awaits you next year.

Last weekend we traveled to Ann Arbor to watch the UM MT Freshman Showcase. This is a revue written, directed and performed by the Freshman MT's with absolutely no input from faculty. They decide which songs, dance numbers, etc to do and decide amongst themselves who will perform in what numbers. Quite an exercise in adult behavior I have to say. This is not a mandatory event. Apparently last year's freshman class was to first to get it together and actually make it happen in about 5 years. I don't have the words to tell you what an amazing production it was. I'm hoping that Gkoukla will post her own impressions as her lovely and very talented daughter was also in this show. The theater was PACKED! The vast majority of the departmental students and faculty came (at 11am! on Sunday morning - that's when they could get theater space - even having lost an hour because of Daylight Savings Time). The upperclassmen were so excited for these kids and made them feel like a million bucks afterwards. My 79 year old Mom came with us and said she couldn't get over the fact that the affection between these class members was palpable on stage (and off) - as witnessed by the choices they made as to how to present everyone equitably and the physicality of their interactions. The parents, of course, were overwhelmed and couldn't stop hugging each other.

I cannot stress enough how I believe that the culture and tone of this program as set by the faculty and administration will allow for so much growth in this already incredibly talented group. The way in which they have learned to trust each other will allow for risk taking and stretching and sharing - such important tools for the developing young artist.

I hope to meet the next "crop" of UM freshman and just want to tell them that the excitement and pride they feel at having been accepted to this program is justified. You are in for the time of your lives!!

As per theatermom's words, the UM Freshman Showcase was astounding. It is incredibly fulfilling as a parent to see your child do something that they love so much. It was clear to us all that the entire class of 2008 are doing exactly what they are meant to be doing. It was a joy to watch. It's interesting that theatermom's impressions and ours were exactly the same. Kudos to your D, theatermom, she did a great job.

Aw, I just got the audition confirmation email for 11/18 today, and now it's really setting in that I'm auditioning there and I'm SO EXCITED!:D I'm totally up for meeting the others who are going that day as well...I'm assuming everyone has the 8:30AM meeting with the faculty? I'll be the girl with the big black velcro boot on her healing broken foot!;P

Great news Cindy! Here's a big break a leg to you and everyone else auditioning at UM on the 18th. This happy UM Mom hopes to have as many of you as possible joining the UM family. If there is any way I can help, let me know.

Go Blue!!

Also, College Mom: I just noticed that "University" is misspelled in the title of this thread so that anyone searching under "University of Michigan" wouldn't be able to find it. Any chance you could correct that?

I just found out that Greg Poggi is the new head of theatre department at UM. He is a friend from here in Dallas at SMU.

Greg started and headed the graduate degree program in Arts Administration at SMU since the early 1990s. It offered a unique dual masters degree from the Cox School of Business and the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU. The only other program I know of similar to it is at CMU.
Every artist needs a manager who understands the business and the artistic side. The program turned out well educated company managers and business managers for theatres, operas, museums and ballet companies.

What a wonderful appointment for him and Greg will be a wonderful new head of theatre for UM.

I hope those of you at UM will get to say hello.

Thanks for that information Mary Anna. Mr Poggi does have a really impressive resume and I'm sure he will do a terrific job at UM. For anyone who might be confused, please know that the Theater and Drama Department at UM is separate from the Musical Theater Department at UM. Brent Wagner is still the Chair of the MT Dept. Both programs operate under the umbrella of the UM School of Music and they share some Acting Faculty but they offer completely different curricula. The Theater and Drama Dept offers BFA's in Acting, Directing or Design/Production and a BA in Theater Studies.

Well here is a U of M thread, so I think this is an OK place to post my U of M questions- though I'm royally confuzzled by this format, gotta say.

I did email two people off of the School of Music website, but I know that I will get faster (and probably just as accurate) responses right here on CC. So here goes.

Am I correct in saying the following?

The acting major is actually a Performance B.F.A. with a concentration in acting, housed in the School of Music under the theatre & drama dept., while the Musical Theatre B.F.A. is its own dept. in the School of Music.

Is it possible to audition for both the Performance and MT B.F.A.s? If so, would there be two separate auditions? Would I need to communicate directly with U of M faculty to work that out? Or is that something that somehow can be communicated via the written application?

Is a "dual unit" degree with the School of Music and the School of Arts and Sciences actually feasible? Is it a normal 4-year track, or is it 5-years? Can some of the requirements of say, an English major, be knocked off by Performance or MT B.F.A required courses (say theatre literature classes)? What do you all think? Too crazy?

Thats all for now. Thanks in advance, you wonderful people. Hope theatermom will perk up at the site of a U of M thread bumped. Miss her!!

Dizzi!!! Glad to see you here - While I might not post quite as much as I used to, I'm still here. In fact, I answered your first question in the post just before yours! In short - you are correct.

Question #2 - I am almost certain that you can audition for both the Performance BFA in Acting AND for MT. I remember hearing my D say that one of her friends in Theater actually auditioned for MT and was not accepted but was accepted into the Acting program. You would have to audition separately for each program. I know that it is not uncommon for people to audition for both VP and MT but I don't know how common an MT/Acting "double feature" is. I say go for it! What have you got to lose? But you should definitely check with the Music School about the feasibility of auditioning for both on the same day as I'm sure you would prefer to do. Laura Strozeski would be your best source for this info.

Question #3 - It IS possible to either double major with MT or more easily to have an Arts and Sciences minor. I think that any "serious" double major might require a fifth year; but UM is definitely interested in working with students who have serious interest in multiple disciplines and does not discourage it. It's not easy and some subjects might present insurmountable scheduling problems when paired with a major like MT that has so many fixed requirements, but it can't hurt to explore the possibilities. Again Laura S is the font of wisdom on these issues.

I personally know of one girl who auditioned for both VP and MT, and is attending in VP, and one who auditioned in acting and MT, and is attending in Acting. Both had to audition on separate days for the 2 departments.

I didn't know where else to post this, so I figured this thread is as good as any.

I got approved for my University of Michigan audition yesterday!!! I don't know if it's actually that hard to get approved or not, but I don't care, it still feels good. :) I also got academic acceptance to Point Park University, so yay!

I am celebrating! :) (Even though nothing's actually happened yet - it's definitely great to have something break up the constant grind of audition preparation and WORRYING.)

Re UM you should feel very good about your invitation to audition. The year my D applied ('03-'04) we were told that they had 900 applications and invited 400 students to audition. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Wow, those are some pretty crazy numbers. I had no idea they were so selective about who they allowed to audition! That really makes me feel good about my application package. :)

Yes, Samia, you should feel good about passing the academic review at UMich. it is a selective school academically. Their BFA admissions has this two step process and you have passed the academic step enough to get to the audition step. Also, any positive news is worth celebrating. Lots of getting into college is your audition but let's not forget that at some schools, lots is your academic qualifications and all the hard work you put into that for years. That is important too and I am glad your academics were looked upon favorably. Congrats. Hope more positive news is in your future this year.

Theatermom - thanks for the clarification about heads of the departments.

On the acting and MT audition question - per the U Michigan current year application for School of Music: "Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Dance applicants applying to more than one of these programs: Due to the extensive nature of these auditions, it is not possible to audition in Ann Arbor for more than one program on any single date. Please indicate different dates for each program. Exception: Musical Theatre and Voice Performance."

You will have to do theatre performance - acting, on a different day from musical theatre.

Question-
I thought somewhere on this board, someone said at one time that there is a connection between Interlochen's Summer program and UM, but a search did not yield any posts about that. Did I dream that?
:)
