University of Michigan or bust!

Hey all. I'm about to send in my applications, and I've come to the conclusion that the only school I really want to go to is the University of Michigan with a major in Actuarial Science.

Applying Early Action, not that it makes a difference.

I'm a white male from Pennsylvania.

SAT-2130 (730 math, 710 writing, 690 CR) I'm retaking this weekend. Will a 2200+ help my chances significantly?
SAT subject tests are pretty insignificant for UMICH admissions.
GPA- 4.0 Unweighted, weighted 4.42
AP Classes- 11th grade: US History, Statistics, Calculus AB
12th grade: Gov, Calculus BC, French
All the rest of my classes were honors classes.
Class Rank- 3/400

ECs:
Academic team - 4 years (JV Captain 10th, 11th grade; Varsity Captain 12th grade)
Future Business Leaders of America - 4 years (Vice President 12th grade)
French Club - 2 years (President 12th grade)
School Musical - 4 years
Student Ambassadors - 2 years
Student Forum - 2 years
NHS 2 years
I've done choir all 4 years.
Participating in a very time consuming musical production this summer.
Also joined the Mock Trial Team this year. Not going to help much, just doing it for fun.

Volunteering- 40 volunteer hours at a soup kitchen, 50 volunteer hours at an underprivileged kids camp associated with the soup kitchen.

Recs will be quite good, I think. One from my 10th and 12th grade English teacher and Academic Team coach who knows me very well and will be able to speak for my character. The other from my 11th grade statistics teacher who will be able to speak for my statistics abilities.
Essays will be very good. Everybody who has read my common app essay has loved it, and I'm hoping I have some interesting points to make in the two Michigan supplement essays.

Other:
National Merit Semi-Finalist, hopefully eventually a finalist.
Semi-Finalist in the Ayn Rand Institute "Anthem" Essay Contest - 11th grade
Semi-Finalist in the Ayn Rand Institute "Fountainhead" Essay Contest - 12th grade

Any idea about my chances? Thanks in advance for any feedback you all can give! Go Blue :D

UMI is a low match since OOS is playing against you.

OOS playing against me makes it a low match? Forgive me if I’m unfamiliar with the terms used on this board, but doesn’t low match mean it’s just a bit tougher than a routine safety or a bit easier than a normal match? Did you mean high match or do I legitimately have a good shot?

Thanks for the input :)

You have an excellent shot at getting admitted to Michigan. I wouldn’t even bother retaking since your current score is fine.

OOS: out-of-state

For future reference, I use 3 levels of match ratings:

Low match: Acceptance is likely but there’s still some room for rejection (near-safety)
Match: Nearly equal odds for acceptance and for rejection
High match: Rejection is likely but there’s still some room for acceptance (near-reach)

Okay thanks, wasn’t quite sure.

Well my fingers are crossed. But since I won’t find out until December, any other opinions?

Can you afford to attend UMich if you get in? OOS tuition/room/bd is very expensive.

What is your backup plan? You don’t want to have everything riding on this. Even if you and your parents are independently wealthy and can afford it, you may not get accepted. Then what will you do?

Yes, we can afford it. Given that back in 10th grade I had my heart set on NYU, I imagine my parents are almost relieved I’m focusing on Michigan instead.

Backup plans are Penn State or UConn, which I’m hoping (I daresay assuming?) I’ll get into.

I think you’re in.

you are definitely in!

Admission decisions are often unpredictable! However, your profile and stats match the profile of the current students at UMich. Good luck!

“I wouldn’t even bother retaking since your current score is fine.”

1420 in the CR+M is definitely good goldenboy, but Michigan’s mid 50% SAT range was 1250-1450 two years ago. This year’s entering class will likely have a mid 50% in the 1280-1480 range. With 25% of enrolling freshmen scoring in the 1500+ range, it would be safer if the OP (who is OOS) scored a little higher.

GoFalcons, you have a good shot, but I would not go so far as to say that you are definitely in. I agree with Catria, Michigan is a safe match. Post on the Michigan forum when you are admitted and we’ll give you a warm wolverine welcome! Go Blue!

Thanks everybody! I really appreciate it! Everything is totally finalized now, so I can begin the longest 2 month wait of my life…
