University of Michigan or Georgetown?

I am completely stuck between choosing to attend Georgetown and the University of Michigan. Both schools are very different, but I love them equally. I plan to major in biology with a pre-med focus - I know Michigan is a science powerhouse, even more than Georgetown, but I appreciate the size and accessibility of professors at Georgetown vs. being one of 800 pre-meds at Michigan. Georgetown’s early assurance program to their medical school with no MCAT is also very intriguing. Academics aside, Michigan definitely beats out Georgetown in athletics and social events and etc., which is something I enjoy. However, Washington DC and the Georgetown neighborhood are one of my favorite areas of the country, and much closer and similar in climate to my home state in the South. As you can see I’m extremely conflicted, where would I succeed academically and enjoy my time the most?!

Michigan

Can you elaborate?

Is there a cost element to consider?

No, as an OOS at Michigan and after aid from both schools they are basically equal.

I think when it comes to premed, they are essential equal. Michigan offers a slight edge thanks to its vast STEM resources, from the multitude of research opportunities though UROP/MRC, but there is something to be said for Georgetown’s smaller premed class, and its access to internships in its hospital and its EAP program. Ultimately, it depends on your confidence in your commitment to your studies and your comfort with subjects such as Chemistry and Mathematics. It also depends on fit and where you think you will be happier.

When u walk around your neighborhood would you rather run into neo-hippies or rich/trendy folks associated with law/politics/journalism/lobbying?

Anything else to move the dial? Is either closer to home or easier to get to? All things equal, I do love DC…

Michigan trumps Georgetown in almost every academic area, maybe I would pick Georgetown if you wanted to do International Relations or study Theology. For Med-School admissions, undergrad school name won’t make a meaningful difference.

“When u walk around your neighborhood would you rather run into neo-hippies or rich/trendy folks associated with law/politics/journalism/lobbying?”

moooop, Michigan’s isn’t Cal!

Seriously, Michigan’s student body is similar to Georgetown’s socioeconomically. Most students come from upper middle income families and tend to be trendy. Admittedly, Georgetown will be preppier, and a higher percentage of its students will come from wealthy families, but Michigan’s student body is generally quite affluent as well, and not that “hippie-ish”.

Thank you for your input, I always see you on the Michigan threads and you always make fair and detailed points. Can you speak at all to the difficulty of Michigan’s science courses? I’ve heard they are very difficult… not saying that’s something to discourage me but it is something to consider when trying to maintain a solid GPA for application to med school.

Georgetown is closer to home and therefore more accessible, and I agree that DC is an amazing place to be. In the end I might have to go back to both schools to make the final call - I’ve toured both, but it’s been a while. We will see!

Alex, I wasnt talking about the students…I said “neighborhood,” not “campus.” Both universities are such that a lot of one’s time there will be spent off-campus, and their respective off-campus environments could not be more different.

I’ve lived 20 minutes from Ann Arbor for over 2 decades, and its still like going through a time warp whenever I go there. Yes, the students are more prosperous than they used to be, but the counter-culture is still alive and well there.

It’s a tough call, I admit but the one thing that could tilt to Georgetown is the direct admission program to their med school. The other thing that could favor UM is it’s healthcare system, one of the best in the country. Lot of people think football is king at UM, it’s not, it’s their healthcare program.

That being said, the schools are pretty different on is public, sports loving in a classic college town, the other a smaller private school in a city with one div 1 sports program. If you can visit, that should break the tie, if you will.

The other thing to think about is what if you change majors, if you decide that computer science or bio-med engineering is really what you want to do, then you’re better off at Michigan. Good luck!

jrsnoles, Orgo and Calculus at Michigan are challenging if you are not naturally inclined toward those subjects and willing to work hard to earn that elusive A.

“I’ve lived 20 minutes from Ann Arbor for over 2 decades, and its still like going through a time warp whenever I go there. Yes, the students are more prosperous than they used to be, but the counter-culture is still alive and well there.”

Agreed. I thought you were referring to the students, not the town.
