I recently have really started to like University of Michigan but I feel like I have a 0% chance of getting in. I guess this post is part question, part chance me. My question is have you (or somebody you have known) gotten into UMichigan Ann Arbor with similar stats to me. I posted this thread in search and selection too.
Large,public high school in Maryland
GPA: 3.84 unweighted, 4.82 weighted
SAT: (one sitting) 1930- 740 (M), 610 (CR), 580 (W)
may take again in October but don’t know how much I can improve. I am really not that good at English and reading but love math. My first time I took the SAT i got a 1690 and then my second time I got a 1930 improving in all 3 sections. I still don’t know how I improved this much since i took my second SAT 3 weeks after the first and I have done no studying whatsoever for any of my standardized testing.
ACT: (one sitting) 28- 32(M), 28(S), 25®, 27(E)
not going to submit ACT
Class Rank: 72/521 (14%)
8 APs by the time I graduate
US, Computer Science, Stat, Econ Micro, Econ Macro, Physics C:Mech, Calc AB, Env Science
ECs: school ambassador, class council, student government, NHS, best buddies(founder and president), Allied(special needs) Soccer,Bowling, and Baseball, Student- Athlete Leadership Board (special needs sports representative)
So basically I am asking if it would be completely pointless for me to apply to UMichigan or do I have a chance?
Both your ACT and SAT scores are below the 25th percentile right now. Your GPA is near the admission average though. You do need to bring up your SAT a couple hundreds or ACT >3 points for a decent chance from OOS.
I would still apply it depends on how good of a reputation your school may have with them but it’s always worth it. Also if you get a watch with a timer it really helps. I went up 4 points on the ACT with just a watch and practice.
@JT199854 my school was ranked #1 in our county and #3 in our state. My school sends close to 15 kids to ivy league schools every year. 3 kids applied to umich this year and all three got in
Hey there! I think you should still definitely apply! If you check out the UMich admissions decisions 2015 thread you’ll see many students that got accepted (especially EA) with “lower” scores! I was OOS and got accepted to UMich this past year with a 30 on the ACT (my SAT sucked) and a very similar GPA to yours! College admissions is always surprising! You never know! Let me know if you have any specific questions about the school or process! Hope this helps!
^^^ ACT 30 is the 25th percentile. That means there were 25% admitted students with ACT at or below 30. ACT 28 is probably around 5th-10th percentile. It is not impossible, but the chance would be much lower than the overall OOS admission rate which is around 20% this year (27% last year).
I’m from Ann Arbor so I think I know a decent amount about umich. There’s definitely not an exact science to getting in, but you have a shot. I know you said you’re not submitting your ACT, but your SAT is about the equivalent of a 29. Your gpa is good, especially with so many APs. Test scores are alright, but you’d be more competitive if you broke 2000 or 30. Like I said though, there’s really no exact science. I have a friend who got in with a 3.7 and a 29 ACT but I also have a friend with a 3.9 and 31 ACT that got wait listed, so things like ECs and essays are really gonna make or break you. Good luck though, it’s a great school!
@ThaiGiraffe thanks for the reply. that was really helpful. I officially decided I am gonna apply. I am gonna visit this summer and try to show that I am really interested. Thanks!
I also know someone from in state got rejected with 3.8+ GPA and ACT 33 this year for CoE. Note that the admission stat keep going up in the last few years. With the ever increasing OOS applicant pool, the OOS admission is getting much tougher than a few years ago. So don’t rely on old stat of friend’s stat from a few years ago.
