@oscar63 I was accepted to UW-Madison, which is fine, but I really wanted to get out of Wisconsin. If it ends up that I’m not able to get off Michigan’s waitlist, I might do a gap year of volunteer work abroad within the medical field, but I’m not going to look too deeply into that until I tour Madison this month. I probably should’ve applied to a few more safeties. I still have Columbia to hear back from, but if I didn’t get into Northwestern, UChicago, or Michigan, I don’t know why I’d get in there haha, especially with my bunk essay.
Are they gonna release the rest tonight? I mean its early april now…
@Jamesesesess Have you considered starting at UW- Madison and transferring for the spring?
Completely disagree with those who claim UM has been deceptive. There is an incredible sense of entitlement on these boards. People seem to feel that just because they got high SATs or a great GPA, they are “entitled” to be admitted. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The reality is that Michigan admitted several thousand students in December. Those were the applicants they really wanted. They have since admitted several more intakes. As time passes, your desirability as a candidate to the university is SELF EVIDENTLY that much less. I was rejected by some colleges and don’t understand why people cannot just accept that they were rejected too. No amount of complaining will change that. Instead, it just looks sad. Face reality and go somewhere you are actually wanted.
@oscar63 Yeah, if I go to Madison I am definitely going to apply to a few schools to transfer in to. I don’t know how many credits Michigan requires to transfer, but I know Northwestern requires at least 24 semester hours. I’ll be going into college with 9 credits already, so 15 in one semester wouldn’t be too hard.
Sorry to hear about you common app James but UW Madison is still a great school !
Still waiting on a decision. this year’s competition was pretty tough. Kids I know with ACT scores in the 33, 34 etc range were rejected. Kids with 4.0 GPAs unweighted rejected. I know its not just a numbers game, the essay/ ECs play a part etc.
Its worth noting I go to a school where a large percentage of the senior class (about 1/3) goes to UofM after graduating.
@alidaman Are you from in state? It sounds like one of those feeder schools at Ann Arbor with 1/3 of the classes going to UMich. If that is tbe case, the rejection of in state students with ACT 33/34 sounds scary.
@billcsho I am in state, my school is International Academy, in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan. It is pretty scary. I don’t talk to many kids at my school so I only know of a few cases. But from the people I know there are a lot more cases of people who are qualified/ overqualified being outright rejected.
Still waiting on a decision from UofM.
Oh yeah. That is one of the top feeder school too.
It’s not much different at my school (in-state too) @alidaman. We have some kids accepted and others who everyone assumed were (and should have been) shoo-ins not get in / still waiting. It seems like everything is turned upside down a bit. I’m one of the apparently lucky ones, accepted in Dec. I’m rooting for you and hope you hear really soon!
Excuse me for stating the obvious, but you cannot possibly be “over qualified” and yet have been rejected or wait listed. If you were qualified, you would have been admitted! Anything else is sour grapes. How many times must Michigan and other highly selective universities state that test scores and GPAs aren’t everything!!
UM does not have enough room to admit all the qualified applicants. There are 55K applicants and they are only accepting around 6K. I don’t think all those who haven’t been accepted are not “qualified”.
@BSM1987 They are actually accepting at least 13,000. 6k is after the ~40% yield.
@billcsho, you’re right, my mistake. We’re just trying to figure out what was not “qualified” about my S’s app - 4.0 in junior and senior year, 11 AP’s, 33 ACT, national merit, legacy, leadership, community service, and his essays demonstrated a passion for the university and the major he’s interested in. He sent a letter of continued interest. We’re IS so it’s not like they would think he’d go somewhere else if accepted to UM.
@BSM1987 It seems your son does have the course rigor and at least good upward trend in GPA. However, UMich now counts GPA from freshmen up while the senior GPA is probably not on the transcript for review. They put GPA as the most important factor, then course rigor and scores. ACT 33 for LSA from in state should be fine if the GPA is not far off from the admission average of 3.85. If he is applying to CoE, then it is hard to say. I know another in state student with ACT 33 GPA 3.8+ got deferred from EA and I think he is still waiting.
Any one know when official admission statistics for this year are being released?
Michigan plans to have 5700 students in this year’s class.
“Michigan is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the world and, as such, admission is extremely competitive. In fact, this year we expect to receive more than 50,000 applications for an enrolling freshman class of about 5,700 students. With a limited number of spaces in our freshman class, we are unable to admit all qualified students.” Courtesy of UM admissions website.
@Jimboboy Late June/July
I’m curious whether anyone knows the degree of relative neediness among work study, Perkins loans, and Direct Subsidized loans. In other words, if one of these was to be lost because of decreased need, which would go first?
