I believe work study is last to go, then Perkins, then Direct Subsidized.
Over 51k applications received, 27% admitted…most competitive year in their history according to an email received by my student. For those who say they were qualified/overqualified and did not get admittance…every year many students who exceed the posted averages for GPA and test scores get turned away…from every competitive college. It’s a numbers game, colleges are trying to create a diverse class, and that is coupled with them also assessing the likelihood of a student accepting their offer…yield is an important metric…factors into rankings and such. It’s not fair, it’s often random…funny thing is that once your in, the shoe is on the other foot and the U can’t say enough to convince you to “pick me.” Note I said “say” not “pay,” it’s still about the Benjamins.
Last year they did have grant money available for wait list students.
@Hobothecat Is there or source for that number, or is it just speculation?
@Jimboboy My kid got an email from admissions quoting those stats. I think it was last week.
If they did admit 27% of 51,000 applicants and the yield rate is remained 42%, then they will have over 5,700 freshmen enrolled already. I have never heard they will reduce the freshmen class size this year. They may plan to have 5,700 students committed by May 1 though.
I have heard that they wanted to decrease the class size to 6,000 as the recent 6,500 was just too high. Perhaps an over correction that will level out next year?
With the wait list they should be able to hit their enrollment target. I suspect they under admitted slightly. The yield is the wild card now, but if it tracks to prior year they will be able to fill any empty slots with wait list.
My S auditioned for the Interarts Performance program and we are still waiting for the decision link on WA. Is anyone else still waiting? Do you know anyone who was accepted into Interarts this year?
@Tysp8963 It is not uncommon to have late admission for those majors required auditions.
I’m from Canada and II applied Jan 27 for LSA and Ross preferred admission, still haven’t heard back from U of M. Anyone know when I should expect a response?
thanks @96blue !
@excanuck99 it makes sense than overqualified people would be rejected. think about it. if UofM wants to maintain good retention rates it won’t admit students who are looking at UofM as a backup.
Still waiting on my admissions decision. they said mid april by the latest. every who hasn’t heard should by this week.
Alidaman: but the statistics don’t support your argument. And again I say, if you are not accepted, you cannot be “overqualified” as the only thing you qualified for was rejection. I’ve heard the same nonsense from people who were rejected by UCLA.
Tsk, tsk, @excanuck99, you may not mean to come across as mean, but that’s how it sounds. I think the words qualified/overqualified need to be taken out of the equation. Admissions itself says that they do not have space in the class for all the qualified students whose apps they received. Based on test scores and GPA, it sounds like @alidaman fits the stated averages (or exceeds). It then comes done to a host of other variables, essays, extracurriculars, state you are from, intended major/interest area you may have referenced, gender, race, income level, and whether or not your admissions officer read you before or after lunch (this last is meant to say that some decisions really are just timing, etc…nothing you can control). Admissions is also trying to assess likelihood a student will matriculate…and that may also just come down to someone’s gut instinct, not something you said or did not say. If @alidaman has still not heard, then I think it is still too soon to say rejection. Given emotions, and how stressed all students are, please be kind to each other.
There is no such thing as over-qualified. They do accept students with 4.0/36/2400. They just do not accept all students with top stat as they are considering other factors too. This year is particularly tough due to the expected much lower admission rate. I know an in state student with GPA3.85/ACT33 not accepted this year. If you have not received a rejection notice, just hang on there. There were late admission before May 1 every year.
guys i will be applying next year: my unweighted gpa is 3.83 but my act is a 35 and my sat a 2340. I have four leadership positions and i do a sport. i volunteer a lot as well with 1000+ hours, but main worry is gpa. im south asian if it helps. do i have a chance?
@johnd4413 your GPA is pretty good and your ACT/ SAT is great. Especially if you’re a Junior in high school (are you a transfer?) your volunteering is great.
South Asian might hurt because Asian students tend to be really qualified. I’m not sure.
With your stats you should apply to some ivys/ schools more selective than UofM
Still waiting. If mid April is the 15th/16th, I should hear back in the next couple of days.
