University of Michigan RD class of 2020 thread

Any proof of UM being rolling??

I don’t mean releasing decisions on a rolling period, but rather accepting applications on a rolling basis, e.g. the later you apply the smaller your chances of getting in…

@mdorbust The proof can be found reading this and other threads. People have been admitted in batches since January.

@ottobot85 UM is no longer a safety school by any stretch of the imagination. Hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants with outstanding qualifications are being rejected as applications have shot up. Don’t despair, however, You are very well qualified.

@mdorbust Do not lose hope. There has been only a small batch of decisions in early March, and since then things have been pretty quiet, which only means one thing: A big batch of decisions is coming soon, perhaps this week itself, and there will be a lot of acceptances in it

Update: I might have gone a bit paranoid and sent an email through their “ask a question” feature, asking about the date when the next batch of decisions will be released. xD :)) Let’s hope they don’t get mad at me for this.

@blazedragon lol did the same thing! :stuck_out_tongue:

@mdorbust “I don’t mean releasing decisions on a rolling period, but rather accepting applications on a rolling basis, e.g. the later you apply the smaller your chances of getting in…”

According to UMich, applying earlier or later does not significantly increase or reduce your chances of getting. HOWEVER, presumably because of this whacko rolling release process, applying earlier means your application will be reviewed earlier with a smaller batch of applicants, and applying later means your application will be viewed later alongside tens of thousands of applicants. (There is only one app deadline though, so this isn’t regular rolling admissions.) Thus, as time goes by, the selection process becomes more competitive. Similar to the deferral process for EA, applying early doesn’t guarantee admission in any way, and they can simply keep your application under review until they’ve had a better view of their pool of applicants, but that small advantage is still there.

This is all information I found from a UMich page, which I will share the link to once I find it/if you want it.

BUT, according to a UMich representative I spoke to, most decisions at this point are going to be released together. When? Well they just keep going with “by mid-April,” and the only better you can get is with speculation. And, based on last year’s thread, a lot of these decisions will be rejections. This is to be expected, based on UMich’s acceptance rate, increasing number of application., and the fact that it seems they don’t really release any rejections until this batch day. No worries though, quite a few should be acceptance as well (based on previous threads).

Also, to everyone, please don’t assume you’ve been rejected because of the wait time. Until they give you a decision, there isn’t really any way to know. (I do still check my portal for little sneaky changes though lol I need to stop).

Good luck, and go blue!

@klingon97 Yes, I have learned quickly it is not a safety school at all. However I still feel like I have a chance, but since I’m from out of state, and I’m in the west, I’m worried that I won’t make the cut since just under 50 kids from my state last year attended. I know my standardized test scores aren’t great, but you do think they’re good enough? And you do not think it is too late to still receive admissions? Thanks for the reply!

@theorigin When I visited UM they gave an alternative explanation. They said the release of decisions was not random, nor based on when you were admitted. They said that they “offered admissions initially to those with the strongest applications and who applied by the deadline”. They would not say how many have been offered admission to date, but judging from those at the receptions, they have made many offers.

@klingon97 Huh, maybe to gauge interest, and then go from there? I’m not sure how that would work though, because students aren’t required to enroll until May 1 (??). And their strongest applicants might be waiting for Ivy Day. I guess it’s to convince them to choose UM over other schools. Have you been accepted and gone to a reception?

Will there be any decisions made today or even this week? Many Ivy leagues are releasing their decisions this week so i hope that Michigan does as well.

@azadsadiq They should. At least they have in past years.

@theorigin I attended but have declined. For students for whom UM is their first choice, the May 1st deadline is irrelevant. Many students accept their offers soon after receiving them. This is especially true of in-state, non financial aid applicants. UM is an amazing bargain.

So is there any guarantee we will know by April 1st? And at this rate will we hear back for financial aid when we get a decision?

I emailed them about the date and they keep saying the same thing: “mid-April”. :(( Like seriously UMich people, can’t you be a little truthful?
Anyway, let us not fret too much, and hope that the decisions come in soon, as by judging by last year’s threads, they drop in around March last week. :stuck_out_tongue:

@theorigin Don’t give up hope. In principal, you are well within the admissible range. Just hope for the best.
@BrandonJD Shortly after you are admitted, you will get your financial aid award. There is no shortage of FA funds, so when you are admitted has no impact on your FA award. Indeed, UM just emailed all admitted students reminding them to apply for aid if they need it, which is a good sign!

Right now it seems like decisions are random. My friend who applied in February was already admitted, while another friend and I who applied in November/December have not heard back yet.

Still waiting on my decision… Expecting a rejection at this point :-q I don’t even know if I’d go if I got in anyways because I’m OOS and it’s crazy expensive. Anybody know how generous they are with scholarships? I’m OOS and applied to the engineering school

@P16NEER At this point pretty much all of the scholarships have been given out (they give most out during EA) so I would expect you would just receive need-based aid. The amount obviously depends on your need.

@NICE8x :(( Well, if that’s true, sadly Michigan is probably out of contention for me. It’s a world-class school, but I just don’t think it’s worth it to come out with that much debt, especially when I’m looking to go to grad school. Thanks for your reply!
