University of Michigan Transfer Chance

I sent in my application for the spring 2012 semester at UofM late September, but it just now is becoming finalized because I had to wait for fall semester to finish in order to send a college transcript. I just wanted to know my chances of admission as a transfer. (VERY confident in my ECs and Essays)

I applied as a senior in H.S. and was wait listed and denied in the summer. I moved across the state to go to Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor this fall because I heard they had a program for transfer students specifically planning on UofM and to become familiarized with the area.

H.S. Stats
-4 AP classes (Biology, European History, U.S. Government and Politics, and Psychology)
-Score of 4 on all
-ACT- 27
-G.P.A.- 3.46
-Plenty of ECs

College Stats-
Fall GPA- 3.86

I will have 38 credits (including AP credits) after this semester and am following the community college transfer guide when picking classes.

If there is any advice you could give to increase my chances, I would really appreciate it.

The person who is best able to help you with this is the Transfer Advisor at your community college. Make an appointment with that person, and ask about this.

Good luck!

So, as in regards to Legacy at UM, how much of that is taken into consideration?
(A legacy such as 4-5 generations including a Vice President, Regent, author to the lyric of the Alma Mater “The Yellow and Blue” and much more others whom received BAs)

Also, i submitted my application last night and i was wondering when i would receive the email confirming my application with the ID number so i can set up my account to check the app status.

Thanks!

Hasn’t UM already started their spring term for 2012?

^^It’s winter term now. Spring/Summer doesn’t start until May.

Are they on a quarter system? I didn’t think so?

Or do they just (oddly) call the semester from Jan-May “winter”?

Just truth in advertising. The Michigan semester that begins in January (right after New Year’s) ends in late April. January, February, and March are winter in Ann Arbor. By April it’s early spring, but calling the January-April semester “winter” is more honest than calling it “spring.” (And the same would be true at many schools that disingenuously call it “spring”). They then have compressed spring and summer half-terms (spring is May-June, summer is July-August). Most full-time students are just there for the two major semesters, fall and winter, but if you need to pick up a class or two, want to graduate early, or are unemployed or underemployed in the summer, it’s nice to be able to take a class or two in the summer.

Very impressive legacy credentials, pqua2. Unlike many public universities, Michigan does consider legacy, but they say you don’t get to double-count: either you’re legacy or not, regardless of how many generations or how many individuals in your family tree. That’s what they say, anyway.

Hard to say. According to Michigan’s most recent common data set, their transfer admission rate in 2011 was 40%–just about identical to their freshman class admit rate for the class entering in the Fall of 2011. I’m inclined to think that with your community college GPA as high as it is (3.86) you should have a pretty good shot.

It’s easy enough to understand why you weren’t admitted as a freshman: your ACT score is right at their 25th percentile (middle 50% 27-31) and your HS GPA would have been well down in their fourth quartile (middle 50% 3.7-3.9). None of that helps them. But I think your community college GPA will be a plus this time around.

The suggestion that you talk to someone at Washtenaw Community College about this is a sound one. They’ve probably got a pretty long track record of placing students at Michigan as transfer students and should have a better sense where tou stand relative to others who have been admitted.
