University of Michigan vs. Michigan State University for Electrical Engineering/Music Performance

Hello,

I am a 2019 high school senior and I am currently deciding between UM and MSU to pursue a dual-degree in Music Performance and Electrical Engineering. I was admitted to MSU and the music program at UM, but I was waitlisted to the engineering college at UM. I was told, however, that I could still go to UM, take the basic engineering courses, and transfer into the engineering college later on. However, I am really struggling to decide between the two schools. I have done some research on Rate My Professors and a lot of the engineering professors at MSU have really bad ratings. Are there any current students/alum that could provide insight on this? I know that they are both good programs, but are the professors also good? In addition, is the engineering program at the University of Michigan really intense? Any insight is appreciated! Decision day is around the corner and I am really struggling. Thank you!

bassplayer, if you maintain a reasonable GPA while taking the engineering prerequisite courses (2.5+), transferring to engineering at Michigan is virtually guaranteed and straight forward. But double majoring in music performance and engineering is going to be very challenging as both majors are demanding.

That being said, if cost of attendance is roughly the same, if you have a natural inclination for the hard sciences (math and physics in particular), and assuming you are willing to work hard, Michigan is a better option.

Thank you very much for the advice! Do you know anything about the professors at MSU for engineering? Like I said, a lot of the ratings on Rate My Professor were a little scary.

Have you talked with your studio professor at each school to get their opinion of you doing a dual degree?

My son studies engineering at MSU still early stage but every professor with a negative rating he has not had any issues with (I was the one concerned). He seems to be enjoying it plus he lives in the eng core housing.

albertsax, Yes! They are both on board with it and are very supportive!

airway1, Thanks for the insight! I wonder if perhaps people at MSU are just more likely to review a bad professor. I know their engineering program has a decent rating, so I was a bit confused when I read the professor ratings.
