A friend’s daughter attended CMU and got high grades in engineering. She got a good job, but not in an industry she likes.
Because CMU is a small program, there are fewer recruiters than at a larger school like Michigan… She and her parents regret that she didn’t accept her Michigan offer.
Off of waitlist and accepted. Hooray. I know the net has been cast a bit wider, but I’ll take it. Any insights into the Math/Statistics program? I’m still considering Lehigh (kind of prefer a smaller school) and Maryland (really like the scholars program).
@janu2481. First thing I have no clue. This year is a complete surprise. I am really shocked they went to the waitlist now.
But talking to a person in the co-op housing the other day, one house is usually highly internationals and there are still more openings for fall then usual. She is hearing from international students that they don’t know if or if they can come back to the US. So that might be a real reality. But honestly it seems everything is up for grabs right now. But I do think being full pay right now is a good thing BTW.
I got off the waitlist and into LSA last night. I’m OOS and applied EA and was deferred. I didn’t submit a LOCI (you do one once you get deferred).
These are my stats:
Valedictorian (4.0)
34 Composite ACT
7 Aps (4/5s)
Tri-Varsity Athlete (captain of 2 teams)
President of Mathletes & Bipartisan Political Club
Got in off Waitlist last night; so excited! I’d resigned myself to going to Ohio State (my safety) but now I’m pumped to at least have the choice between two schools I love.
STATS —
OOS (EA deferral, then waitlist; completed LOCI, but it was last-minute and not great)
LSA
GPA: 4.27 W, 3.75 UW (Magna Cum Laude)
34 ACT, 1440 SAT, 2 subject tests (Chemistry, 620; Math II, 690)
6 APs, not including the 4 I’m taking this year (3s, 4s, 5s)
Moderately strong extracurriculars, but nothing crazy
Wrote a book for an AP English Lang project (~77k words; I intend on revising and publishing it sometime in the future)
Some of my best college app essays, IMHO (except the LOCI, lol)
I think they’re mostly pulling from the higher-caliber OOS applicants because almost everyone who got waitlisted at my school got in yesterday. Good luck to everyone else. Go Blue!
@bkatguy Congratulations!! It’s great that MI accepted more before May 1. The UVA waitlist just started moving as well; earlier at lots of top schools. Schools like Vandy consistently take more from their waitlist than their RD. MI is usually much less so good news!
I don’t know the specific programs, but my older student took a hard look at Lehigh. Great programs, but although the buildings were beautiful outside he felt like there were no nice areas to hang out indoors and in the cold Northeast he worried about that. The other downside is the town. There is nothing to do but drink in the frat houses. Now compare that to Ann Arbor and eventually (doubtful for this fall) big time sports and a great college town. Just a few things to consider.
My kid has taken several math/stats courses at the 200 and up level. She didn’t take any of the 100 level courses, such as Calc 1 and 2), because of AP BC credit and their math placement test, which you and your advisor would/will discuss at orientation, if you attend.
The math program at UMich is Top 10-15 in the US. The professors are available during office hours and UMich also has free tutoring at their math lab. Use both liberally. The courses are very difficult and grading is based on strict %'s, very little to no curve. The lower level math courses are weeder-type courses.
If you have any specific questions about the math/stats program, then PM me.
My son got in off of the waitlist last night. ACT - 33 (34 superscore), 3.9 GPA unweighted, a bunch of EC. He is probably not going to attend. He is set on attending U of Miami, but may use this acceptance as leverage for getting some money. College of Liberal arts, out of state.
I’m looking on some advice on whether it’s worth attending UMich. Before getting off the waitlist, I accepted a spot to Georgia Tech on a full ride (I’m OOS to both GT and UMich). I’m interested in majoring in Political Science and either transferring to Ross as a BBA student or doing a business minor. I received admission to McCombs at UT and UC Berkeley but turned those down for GT because of the money they were offering. UMich has always been one of my dream schools and they’re #4 for Political Science. However, I’m not sure if paying OOS tuition is truly worth it. Any thoughts?
This is hard one. GaTech is great school but for Engineering. Full ride vs 65+ is hard to give up. If money are not issue, UMich is definitely better for Political Science. Do you plan to go for grad school? It may be hard to find a job after Political Science from GaTech.
@momsearcheng I’m considering going to law school after college, and my parents said they would completely cover the costs of any sort of grad school if I took the full ride to GT. I don’t regret my decision committing to GT, but I also turned down some T20 private schools since they gave no financial aid and sometimes wish I had maybe committed to one of them instead. The thing about UMich is that if I were able to internally transfer into Ross, I know that I could land a decent-paying job straight out of college. I’m not 100% sure about going to grad school, which is why I want to invest in my undergrad. However, most students in the scholarship program I’m in at GT end up getting into their top choice grad school (be it law, MBA, or med). Committing to UMich is definitely a risk since I don’t have guaranteed admission to Ross, but I know I have more educational opportunities for my interests there compared to GT.
Also for UMich, I have an external scholarship that would cover housing and meal costs for all four years so I would only be paying tuition. That’s why UMich is more affordable than the private schools I received admission to.
