University of Michigan Worth OOS tuition ??

Hi Im from Illinois and I was recently accepted to the University of Michigan College of engineering (mechanical engineering) for Fall 2015. I am wondering if OOS tuition is worth it since Ill only be there for 2 years. I do not want to go to UIUC btw.

If I were you, I would go. I’m applying there next year (OOS as well), and it’s an amazing school especially for what I want to do, medical field (leaning towards biochemistry but I am applying there for their biomedical engineering program). It’s also known for a great engineering school. Where else did you get accepted?

@southernbelle16‌
No offense, but you’re only a junior in high school.

Maybe your parents will happily pay a lot more for an OOS public that will yield little/no benefit…ESPECIALLY little/no benefit for a medical field…, but most parents won’t and can’t.

I noticed that you have a lot of OOS publics on your list. Hopefully your parents have said that they’ll happily pay the much higher costs…if they won’t, these schools will be unaffordable.

I also got accepted to UIC. I only applied to two schools, since I always wanted to go to Michigan.

@mom2collegekids I was offering my opinion to this person who clearly asked for advice. No offense to you, but it’s great I’m thinking of my future now. He did not ask what other schools I was applying to, therefore you do not need to be commenting about my financial situation. I clearly know what my parents can afford and I am thankful for that. This is about his college choice, not mine. Thank you very much.

OOS tuition is never “worth it” from a bang/buck ratio unless you live in a state with 0 good publics.

But if you are wealthy then it might be worth it to you.

@bomerr to me it’s worth it because in my state only one college offers biomedical engineering, and it’s not a very good school. What I’m going to apply at UMich for isn’t ranked well in my state’s school. Therefore I think OOS tuition would be worth it in that aspect. I’m not however what the creator of this thread thinks about engineering schools in his state.

How would you PAY for UMich? What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay?

Why don’t you want to go to UIUC?

Exactly…and not worth it because the OP has very good instate publics. Unless the parents have money to blow… …

IM A GIRL BTW :slight_smile:

@umichalex my bad sorry, just trying to help.

@southernbelle16
You could probably do another major–whatever major your local state is strong in instead-and still make a good salary after graduating. Or you could do mechanical engineering undergrad at your local uni then do biomedical grad somewhere else. Bang/Buck ratio would be higher.

I used live in Michigan and the only OOS/full-price schools I am applying to are Stanford & Yale because I recognize OOS tuition is just not worth the cost.

I would take out loans and my mom can only help me pay for housing. I will also rely on a financial package that michigan will offer me since i do come from a low income family

@umichalex
You can only take out 5k in personal loans on your own name. Rest require your parents to co-sign.

Have you gotten the fin-aid package? I don’t expect an OOS student to get much aid even if they come from a low income family.

You’re a VA resident.

LOL…since when is Virginia Tech " not a very good school"???

I am a junior in high school currently, however I want to see what my chances will be for Richmond next year. Also hope someone can recommend if I should apply ED I, ED II, or Regular, based on my information below. The below information includes classes I am taking next year.

GPA: 4.3 Weighted
Credits: 6 English, 5 Math, 7 Science, 4 Foreign Language, 5 History, 4 Electives (Art, Medical, Psych)
Dual-Credit: I have will have taken 7 college level classes by next year- including Math, Art, Science, English and History.
Extra-Curricular: Class Secretary, Academic Bowl, 3 Clubs, All-American Scholar, Cheering, Tennis, Volunteering w/ Kids, Elderly and Animals, teach art to kids on the side.
ACT: 34
SAT: 2200 (All-Around)
Other: My Dad graduated from there and I am a Virginia Resident.

I also am aiming for perfect SAT and ACT scores, I’m going to keep taking them. I also am taking the SAT Biology Subject Test in the fall to showcase my science qualities. I intend to major in biology with pre-med advising. Richmond is my #1 choice, other schools I am applying to: Wake Forest, UCLA, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, John Hopkins, and USC.

Glad you have parents who will happily (over) pay for you to go elsewhere.

And if you are going to be premed, then over-paying for an OOS school is really silly.

@mom2collegekids I really don’t understand why you are bringing up my stats and making this thread about me. You do not know where I go to school and where everyone wants to go, and it’s no one’s business what my parents pay for. Obviously UMich isn’t my number one since you’ve felt the need to stalk me. Tech is good I am applying there but not for that. I have not looked into tech for biomedical engineering, only for their Vet school. I know VCU offers biomedical engineering but I do not want to go there. I was not referring to Tech in my statement. I think you just need to stop being a bit creepish and help the person of this thread and not worry about what I post or what my parents want to pay, or “over spend” in your opinion. Biomedical engineering is not my intended path, however I want to apply there to see my shots with it. I also know people who go there and like the atmosphere. There’s more to a college than a freaking major.

Yeah, from what I’ve seen, state schools provide very shaky aid to OOS students.

I’d go with UIUC, it’s just as good of a school as Michigan and a bargain for in-state tuition, especially if they give you merit aid.

Then you shouldn’t have said “because in my state ** only one college offers biomedical engineering, and it’s not a very good school.” **

It’s fine that you don’t want to go to VCU, but that doesn’t mean that it is the only school in your state that offers BioMedE. And, it’s fine that your parents will happily pay for you to go to an OOS public. There are parents who will happily pay.

From what I KNEW VCU was the only one. However, I still don’t think Tech’s is exactly all biomedical. I’d have to do more research. I’m a junior, I have time. It doesn’t matter what I want to do. It matters what this person who made the thread wants to do/know. I just find it a bit creepy that you’re so determined to stalk my posts, financial situation, and comment trying to prove me wrong when I’ve done nothing. It doesn’t even matter what I said, she isn’t interested in any VA schools by the description of this thread. That’s also my opinion, you and others might think different.

@southernbelle16
If you are pre-med, your best bet is to goto a smaller university where you will be a big fish in a small pond. It’s easier to standout and depending on the schools rep it should be easier to get a high GPA.

Paying private school money (OOS/ful-pay) tuition on a public education is just really stupid IMO. (this goes for the OP too)

@bomerr like I said above, I’m not sure yet. UMich is NOT my number one, it’s just one of the schools I’m applying to. However the school I want is in state yet it’s about the same price as UMich OOS. I understand where you’re coming from though I get it. I’m just keeping my options open right now.
