“The University of Minnesota is looking for ways to halt the enrollment trend of losing local high school students to neighboring states and bolster admissions to its system campuses.” …
I think Governor Walker is doing a fine job on behalf of UM.
Well, the soaring OOS tuition increases are chasing away a lot of non-Minnesotans who would love to attend Twin Cities. Used to be a genuine bargain, but with no financial aid, all of the Illinois students I know walked away from their UMinnesota admission offers. So more room for the natives!
@Dave_Berry - In reading the article, they say, “The task force aims to increase enrollment by 3,000 students, including 2,000 Minnesota residents and 1,000 non-residents, by 2024.”
The admissions profile indicates that the current demographic is 64% in-state and 36% out-of-state ( https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/counselors/U_of_M_profile.pdf ).
Honestly, it looks like they are just increasing enrollment overall. It doesn’t seem like their targets will actually shift the balance very much at all toward in-state students. Whether or not the increased enrollment is at the upper or lower end of act/gpa ranges would likely depend on if they change their tuition and scholarships to make them more competitive with the schools in neighboring states.
