How do you like it, the campus, the professors, the courses, etc. etc.

What are the biggest pros and cons?

Am I likely to get in?
28 ACT 9 Writing
3.6 GPA
5 AP's, several enriched/advanced classes
No big EC's, not a captain or anything, various clubs and activites, and the only academic club was Science Olympiad this year, along with key club (volunteerwork) since soph year. I have a job working this year, I am moved from Africa in 2000, and I'm the first generation student to go to college in the US. I speak Arabic fluently and I know a lot of french.

Thank You, I really appreciate it. Anyone can answer these questions, you don't have to be a student there as long as you know about it! Merci :D

92% of admits to CBS had a 28-36 on their ACT. Looking at the stats, that places you better than only 8% of accepted students. I don’t know what percentage of the admits had a 28 ACT, though. Since Biological Sciences is the most selective, it might be a bit difficult to get into (although your odds are good for the College of Liberal Arts as a backup).

As for the rest of your questions, I’d be interested to hear as well!

I really want to get in the College of Biological Sciences though, It’s my first choice college by FAR. If I don’t get in, I don’t really know where to go. What are the colleges have a good Biology program in the Twin Cities?

Carleton is the #6 ranked liberal arts college in the country, and is about 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities (but isn’t at all the big-city atmosphere, if that’s what you’re looking for). Its biology program is also very good.

Thank You for your helpful answer! I was wondering, I feel uncomfortable about going to a catholic school though. How difficult will it be, I mean how religious is the school and what religious things are required (courses, songs, etc.)? Thanks

If you’re uncomfortable with going to a catholic school that has theology requirements, you should look into Macalester, which is right near by. There biology department is great and if you look at the graduate schools that the Macalester biology department sents their students to, you will see that they are very successful

It’s possible, people with your stats have definitely made, however, the acceptance rate have dropped considerably over the past couple of years. Your multilingual status and African heritage will help I think. You should apply and make sure you do an interview. Good luck!

The campus is enormous! If you are looking for a quiet, small college experience, this may not be a wise choice. Coming from a small town in Northern Minnesota, the U of M was a complete culture shock. The public transportation is great. You do not have to own a car if you want to go here. For $97/semester, the UPass gives you unlimited public transportation access. The professors here can be a hit and a miss. They are all very knowledgeable, but may not be the best at teaching a large class. So far, I have only had bad experiences in Chemistry and Anthropology. As others have noted, CBS is very competitive. What careers are you considering pursuing?

If it is anything related to human health, you should consider applying to the College of Liberal Arts as a Physiology major. In the long run, you actually have more flexibility with your degree to take classes you enjoy. As a Physiology major, I am taking the same core classes as my peers from CBS. The only difference is that they have more requirements for their degree. For instance, I am able to take advanced courses when some of them are taking ecology/evolution. If you speak Arabic fluently, you would not have to worry about the second language requirement that all CLA students must take.

Let me know if you have anymore questions! I’ll try to come on here from time to time. Good luck!

Congrates! i’m from africa too, west africa specifically. I’m really interested in the u of m but my stats are no where as impressive as yours. I’m determined to go into medicine but good colleges like the u may be out of range right now. please, oh please send me a quick reply. let me know if you applied and if you made it. also if you stats change. if the program is rigorous even at another school, how rigorous and stageies for getting the same qulifications for graduate school if i don’t get in immediately. Thanks a ton; ps: people like you make me feel like i haven’t even broke a sweat for college, long ways to go if i’m to compare to applicants like you.
