University Of Missouri Journalism

Hey,

I'm a prospective freshmen who's been directly admitted into Missouri's School of Journalism. Mizzou is my #1 choice and I'm really intrigued by all that it has to offer. That said, I can't wait until I attend there next Fall.

I visited a couple weeks ago during Meet Mizzou Day and learned a lot about the school. Still, I would appreciate it if someone could give me their insight on a few questions I had.

What advice would you give to an incoming freshmen? What can I expect?

What's a typical day/week as a Mizzou Journalism student?

Any classes, activities, etc. you recommend I sign up for?

Also, what is there to do around there for fun? I know Princeton Review ranked it as one of the top party schools in the country.

I'm Indian and am coming from a school that's 95% Asian (opposite of Mizzou). It seemed fine when I visited but do you think my ethnicity would be a problem?

Any other comments, suggestions, advice, etc. on the j school or university in general you have?

Thanks. Your reply is really appreciated.

Note: I posted this before but decided to repost with a broader title in order to attract more responses.

My son is a freshman at Mizzou now. It is very diverse, you will fit right in!

As far as tips: You will move in a full week before everyone else for Freshman orientation. They go to a tremendous amount of work for the freshman. They’ll have midnight BBQ , shows at Jesse Hall, free ice cream on the quad, etc etc. Shakespeare’s Pizza is very close & also does a lot of on campus stuff. By the time your orientation week is over, you’ll have met tons of new people & know your way around completely.

My son goes out to eat, to the mall, to the movies, etc. They really like Deja Vu - a comedy/dance club. It is open to college kids only on Thursday nights. They stamp your hand if you’re underage. They have comedians there too sometimes. There is another club the AG kids like but I can’t remember the name. It’s a western place for line dancing, etc - a lot like the Wild Horse. They have free activities, sometimes pizza & movies, etc on Friday nights at the Union too. It seems there is always something on campus to do.

Football season is huge. Tailgates, free tshirts, etc. Sign up to join “True Tiger”. They’re an alumni association but that part is for current students. Before home football games, they distribute free tshirts to it’s members…“Beat Kansas”, “Beat Ohio”, etc. They also have fun activities throughout the year.

Campus is within walking distance to the downtown area. It has a lot of shops but also really neat little restaurants.

Be sure to go to Summer Welcome. You’ll get info in the mail. If your parents are going (I recommend it) the Super 8 on the East side is nice. Clean, fairly new, etc and about 10 minute drive from campus - you’ll stay in the dorms. My son enjoyed it. The kids have their own sessions as well as the parents, then you meet back for meals, a fun show at night, etc. Then you’re off to the dorms (kind of  ) while the parents leave until the next day.

Do everything you can in the beginning to get out, meet people, etc. You’ll get off to a great start !

Sorry, I don’t know any specific details about journalism, except Brad Pitt is one credit away from his J degree at Mizzou…:)
