I'm applying to Missouri because I don't have money and I want to do journalism, but I don't know much about it at all. Anyone want to enlighten me? Also, how hard is it to get in here? They don't consider anything at all except grades and SAT's? I'm from Connecticut and can't visit and I'm guessing the atmosphere is pretty different...anyone want to tell me exactly how conservative Columbia is? Thanks for any insight.

I'm a freshman there, and I'm from out of state (Minnesota)
I'm not doing journalism, but almost every other out of state student is. My mom was a journalism major here and went on to be very successful...so I think it's a very good journalism school.
It's a big, pretty campus...lot's of people...as for the social life: I've found that a lot of people go home on the weekends which is kind of annoying. Greek life as a pretty big presence on campus. I'd say the atmosphere is more conservative...but maybe that's just because I come from a very liberal background. A lot of people I've met are from really tiny towns in Missouri and there's like a million from St. Louis. But you kind find some liberal people around. I can give you more information if you are more specific about what you are looking for and what you want to know about the school.

I am from St. Louis and my parents both graduated from journalism at Mizzou. I visit there at least three times a year and know pretty much everything you would want to. Mizzou is full of history and tradition. The concept of Homecoming was invented there. The football and basketball games are awesome and everyone goes to see them. Greek system is huge, but you don't have to be in it to have a social life. The campus is pretty. I think it looks like a combo of USC and U of Maryland. It's a really gorgeous campus. All of my friends that go there never ever want to come home because they're having so much fun. Don't worry about being out of state either. I know lots of people who decided not to associate with any of their high school friends because they wanted to start fresh and didn't have a problem making friends. Mizzou is an awesome school that you should definately consider going to. It's one of my top two choices even though I am from in state. Also, it isn't that conservative. It's like any other school. There are sooooooo many people, not all have the same mindset. Some are liberal, some are conservative and some are moderate. Also, the journalism school is usually #1 in the country, so if you want a good school, a fun time and the whole college experience, you seriously need to consider Mizzou. I know I am.

Thanks for the replies...I'm not sure how this whole atmosphere thing is going to work out. I am from a VERY liberal background and not quite into the whole drinking/partying thing but I guess the awesome journalism would make up for it and it's so huge that you don't have to be into the party stuff? I can still find friends? Lol. I might have to try to find some major plane discount and visit it.

as a freshman from st louis, at mizzou, i can tell you a lot of things...the Greek system is pretty huge on campus...possibly 50/50 this year int erms of votes, i guess, mayeb a bit more republican...i worked for the Kerry Edwards campaign this year, which was awesome, and columbias an okay town. but what really bugs me is the stupidity of some of the kids here. im in the honors college, on the honors floor, and theres still some dumb people. sure, theres some cool ones, but most of us want to transfer/get out. the social life i sfun for a while, but it is usually a perpetual cycle of eat sleep drink, etc. while its fun, it also kind of numbs your soul to anything else. columbia has a cool music scene, but in general, mizzou is a generic school, which usually attracts generic people. I do regret comign here. the classes and the professors though, are generally good. youd be out of state which would mean abotu 25000 dollars. spend your money on a smaller, private university or college, and be happier for it. a lot of schools will give merit and need based aid. never limit your options; apply wherever you even feel you might want to go.
p.s. EVERYONE here is journalism---while ive heard the programs great, it may not be worth it...nwestern and other schools are just as good.

repeat1982-
people say Missouri is #1 for journalism and it's significantly cheaper than a lot of places, esp. since they offered me guaranteed money -- still not my first choice, but a decent safety, I'd think... Don't worry, I'm not limiting myself, far from it. I'm applying to way too many schools.

But a lot of the stuff you brought up is stuff I'm a little concerned about. I don't really drink, don't really party... I was hoping it would just be such a big school that I'd still have friends. LOL Will I?

I know lots of people who don't really drink and party there ... not nerdy either ... some greek, some not. You'll definitely find a place to fit in. And when you choose journalism schools, make sure you know the philosophies of each so you'll be happy where you go. Mizzou offers more practical experience than others that are more theoretical, for example.

dont worry, youll find friends...i didnt used to drink and party as much, but ive kind of gone that route now...you never know...either way, you will find enogh people to hang out with

its not hard to get in either.......if u have a 24 ACT and are in the 50% of your class, your in.

hm...I got an acceptance letter and it didn't mention the journalism school...I thought my numbers should put me into the journalism school, so does that mean I didn't get in or what? Thanks.

you should definetly call them....on your app did you put down pre journalism????
if not, you can switch in after soph. year...

the journalism school just sent me a letter...they were just behind the app I guess
Now I'm conflicted -- I love everything about the journalism department and nothing else about the school...I guess I'll see what happens ;)

Eireann...let me break it down for you. I'm a freshman here at Mizzou, I'm in journalism, I'm out-of-state, and I have to disagree with a lot of what's been posted by these other people. This time last year, I was worried about the same things you are--whether or not the school was dominated by greeks, if I could make friends who didn't drink, etc. Soon after coming here, all my fears were put to rest.

There are plenty of liberals on campus, myself included. There are conservatives, but they by no means dominate the campus. Keep in mind, this is a swing state. There are going to be people with different views and opinions. As a journalism major, what more could you want? With this past being an election year, it was really awesome witnessing people get involved. Bush came to town, but so did Kerry's stepson and Brad Pitt...

There are a lot of Greeks on campus, but that comes with any major public university. There is absolutely no pressure to join, though, more than likely you're going to make most of your friends in the dorms, which are mostly non- greek.

There's also no pressure to drink or party. It all comes down to the friends you choose. I was worried that it'd be hard to make friends who weren't into that scene, but it's been really easy. Let me break it down for you, Mizzou has an amazing freshman program, called FIG. You're put into a group of people with the same major and interest, and live with these people and take classes together. There is no easier and better way to make friends with the same passions and ideals, if you ask me. My closest friends here are in my FIG.

Yes, there are a few stupid students to be found on campus. But there's no doubt that these have to exist at every university in some form. I recommend you get into the Honors College, and if you don't have the scores, petition. It's not necessary, but it's a closer-knit community and it weeds out the chance of interacting with these "stupid" students.

I don't know how serious you are about journalism, but if you want a great school with excellent opportunities to get you prepared for the field, I'd come here.

i agree in most part...you WILL find friends, regardless, you DONT have to drink, and you CAN avoid the Greek system. The Honors College and the honors floor are really nice too. it may be a lot better for you from out of state....to me ti feels like everyones from st. louis, so nothings really changed...i ahvent been able to find all that much to do if I dont want to drink...sure you can go downtown or watch a movie or something, but that gets old after a while...everyone has their own opinions...btw, you can find a lor of liberals here too, im one...

the classes are also pretty huge...dont always coutn on a personal relationship with your prof...if you come here, definetly do the FIG program. as for the city of Columbia....ehhh...its decent enough...youll be spending a lot of time on campus anyway...
