I have a few questions about UNT in Denton, TX. I'd prefer responses from Music Majors at UNT, in particular Music Teacher Education majors. But if you have heard something about the school that you want to share or if you go to UNT and aren't a music major (which would make me wonder how you found this post), please share!

Jazz studies program is awesome. I've heard that many times. What about the other areas? Music education is what I want to pursue. How is that program at UNT? Go into as much detail as you can/want. Thanks!

Also, if you have any other information you'd like to share about the campus, classes, organizations, teachers, Denton itself, or ANYTHING else related to UNT, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Whether it's positive or negative input, please don't overly criticize the school. That just wouldn't be helpful. Thanks again.

I did not post a reply since you hoped for UNT music students, but just to get the ball rolling … UNT’s music school is across the board top notch. As you said the Jazz program gets much of the national glory, but it is not simply the jazz program. I know several teachers who received their music ed degrees at UNT and speak highly of the program. UNT requires an applied instrument audition for all students seeking entry to the music school. This includes composition, theory and ed majors. It is also a large school and from what I have heard at least with composition fairly cut-throat. It’s almost a two year process to even be considered a comp major as they wade through all those who take the first year of theory and comp. courses. Music ed. may be completely different although my friends have attested to the size of the program.

Denton is a very cool town with a great music scene. While smaller than Austin, the music scene is of the same ilk.

Sorry I cant be of more specific help. Good luck in your search.
