Just a quick naive question for anyone who wants to enlighten me. Does anyone know the stats on UNT College of Music acceptance rates? I know they'll fluctuate every year, but if you happen to know the percentages from last year or the last few years, that'd be great. Also, if you happen to be a student at that school and majoring in music ed., what are you satisfied and unsatisfied about the school? What is your goal after studying here? High school band director? Go for another degree? Private instructor?

I don't need a whole bunch of specific info. so I don't imagine you'd need to know all my personal reasons for choosing this school and my situation and stats and all that stuff. If you want all that, I don't mind giving it. But I want to hear about your experience with this school. Thanks!

I do not have numbers for you but I have a personal experience of sitting in on the music ed info session during audition day. My S was undecided between ed vs performance so he auditioned for both at UNT. I was very impressed with what the department had to say. Their is a prof there that has an “outreach” music program for the kids in the area so they come there to take lessons and are taught by music ed students. The students I talked to are working or volunteering in the schools as sophomores. They told me the city of Denton loves music and combined with the surrounding area there are multiple opportunities to work with kids, high school down to elementary. I also noticed that UNT starts out earlier than what I had expected as far as getting the music ed students in the school classrooms. Not student teaching but just “being there”. Guess you can decide if you will like it or not! At another audition, my son was asked by the professor if he wanted to be a band director or a college instructor. My son said “college” so the professor told him to be a performance major and that’s what he is doing. Not at UNT however. Maybe for his masters!

Thanks so much. So if he’s a performance major, I’m assuming he would be some sort of specialist in his instrument as a college instructor rather than a band director or assistant director at that college? Well that’s very cool and I hope your son does very well in his future endeavors. Thanks again for the very helpful personal experience.

music ed you learn all the instruments. Performance you specialize in your chosen instrument. He doesn’t want to be a band director at college either. By the way, S didn’t know until his audition at UNT that he had to be interviewed by the music ed department (1 guy) as part of his acceptance. Surprise!

Music Ed applications frequently require an interview. It is there they explore the reasons you want to teach in the K-12 environment, your experience with children, and desire to lead student band, orchestra or chorus groups. If this is not what you want to do and you do not feel you can express why you want to pursue it, do not go into music ed.
