University of Notre Dame Regular Decision 2022

@CatherineF I’m not sure if you’ve seen this but if you haven’t, they mention AP credit there
https://firstyear.nd.edu/current-students/ap-ib-sat-ii-transfer-credit/
Based on this, it looks like it’s really up to the individual departments, and there isn’t necessarily going to be a black and white policy.

@MEC1026, that’s the page I saw. However, at the bottom it states: “A new credit and placement policy will be available in early spring. In the meantime, questions about credit and/or placement by examination for students entering in Fall 2018 may be directed to the First Year of Studies by email at firstyear@nd.edu or by phone at (574) 631-7421.” I think they will have to come out with a policy, hopefully sooner rather than later.

ND will not grant college credit for AP exams to satisfy any portion of the core curriculum. AP credit can be awarded to satisfy major requirements if that department allows.

@CatherineF My son was admitted in the REA round and this topic of AP credit came up during one of the presentations at the Mendoza College’s Open House in late Feb. The Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dave Nees (spelling?), said that the policy was still being finalized, as Mendoza had decided that some AP coursework would be eligible for credit, but that Mendoza’s policy conflicted with Arts & Letters policy for some very similar AP offerings. So, it’s an issue they are working, but nothing was final in late Feb.

I will definitely keep that phone number to help with the decision making. But as mentioned above…need to be admitted first. THANK YOU

My son applied to Mendoza so that is very helpful information. I wish my S would have applied in the first round but Boston College WAS his first choice; ND WAS his second choice; Harvard his third choice. The waiting is difficult. If he was admitted to BC do you think his chances are similar to getting into ND? We are in Chicago and well, let’s face it, I would like him close to home!

@CatherineF I was accepted EA to Boston College, but deferred by Notre Dame REA so I am not exactly sure if they can be compared accurately regarding chances of acceptance.

@CatherineF Unfortunately, I have no idea if his chances are similar between Notre Dame and Boston College. If anything, I would guess that what school in Chicago’s he’s applying from could possibly make a difference. A few parents at the Open House told me that their kids were nervous applying from some of the well known parochial schools in the Chicago suburbs because ND gets a lot of applications from those “feeder” schools. I know ND officially says it doesn’t take geography into account in admissions, but these parents did not seem to believe that was the case. Regardless, best of luck to your son!

Thank you, @Libby1901. Surprised that the only foreign language for credit is Latin.

I am finding there is no “equation” on understanding university acceptance. When I review other student statistics he doesn’t have the “science” or “math” awards others have. His time has been spent on baseball (captain), basketball and varsity (captain) football (25 hours a week), being a catechist aide at our local church and was elected President of NHS by his peers. Most students talk about their academic achievements so it’s hard to compare my S with other applicants. Stats: 33 ACT (34 superscore), 5.2 weighted GPA, 4.03 unweighted. AP classes: 5’s I never thought his credentials might not be “enough” but he has really enjoyed his time in high school. He also is at a public high school. Any commentary or discussion would be welcome.

It’s pretty frustrating though that you will never know what you didn’t do right to get into your dream school. Northeastern was one of my top choices and I got deferred EA while a girl in my grade (not a nice one either) got into their Chem Honors program with a 30K scholarship and she has lower ACT scores, lower grades, lower ranks (we’re ranked at different schools), I’ve taken MYP and IB courses all throughout high school, she just started taking IB classes junior year, and she only has 2 EC’s compared to mine (which are numerous but I put in a lot of time and effort and they are not just resume boosters either, which I communicated well). The girl suspects she only got in because she is Hispanic (she got the hispanic scholarship…her words not mine).

@kitkat2018, what good does it do to compare yourself to others? I think it’s you who suspects she got in because she’s Hispanic. Either way, my advice is to let it go. You don’t know what her essays looked like. You don’t know what her teacher and GC recs looked like. Take advantage of every opportunity the school you attend offers, and run your own race.

If the portal information hasn’t come out today, is it still reasonable to expect decisions next Monday the 19th? I haven’t received an email, although that could just be because I am deferred EA, so I don’t know if we will get a new portal invite or if it’s just the same…

@suzy100 and @Libby1901 I know the rules for AP just changed, but I can tell you for last year’s class, I remember that the info for foreign language AP credit (other than Latin) was separate from the rest of the subjects shown in your link. So I also didn’t realize at first that my daughter would receive course credits for her AP Spanish exam score. She got a 5 on the exam and was placed into Interm Span 2. I think a 4 placed you into Interm Span 1, and they may even give credit for a 3 score. For class of 2021, you have to take a language and graduate at the intermediate 2 level (equivalent to 4 semesters). So the AP exam saved my daughter taking 3 additional semesters of Spanish and she got 9 credits. I tried to find the page I’m thinking of for you, to give you the link, but couldn’t find it. So don’t take my word in case it has changed, but maybe you might want to call or email the First Year of Studies office to clarify.

@CatherineF comparisons to multiple schools for different students is hard, especially to these selective schools where each school might look for something a little different; or something in your S’s resume may appeal more to one school (essay, recommendation, activities, leadership). But in regards to your specific school choices listed: my nephew last year had amazing credentials with his only deficit maybe a lower standardized test score (32 ACT?). He was denied ND and admitted BC, where he ultimately went.

How does your nephew like BC?? We absolutely fell in love with the campus last year during our college visit tour. For my S…both schools would fulfill his love for economics.

Thank you @waitingmomla, that is helpful to know. We’ll dig deeper if she confirms acceptance - which I think she likely she will.

@Alcyone3 when your portal came out for EA, do you know if it was exactly 7 days before? If we get it by Wednesday, I’d think the 19th would still be the day, otherwise the 23rd is likely. IMO.

@MEC1026 Yes, it was exactly 7 days before, the portal email was sent on 12/6 and decisions were released on 12/13. I’m still hoping for the 19th, but you’re right, it might be the 23rd. Fingers crossed for the 19th though!!
