University of Oregon/University of Arizona

U of O has the reputation of being a good quality state U. Eugene is a great college town as well. As with any large pac-10 school, it will have a broad range of educational opportunities, plenty of school spirit and sports and a diverse student body. I don't know a lot about the school stats, but U of O does not get described with the negatives that U of A gets around here. Given the choice between Eugene and Tuscon..................no question, it's Eugene.

U of A has a lot of very serious students as well and tons of school spirit. My D was initially dying to go to school in CA only to find she missed Tucson, transferring back sophomore yr. She loves the school, is in the honors college but only has 1 class per semester in that program. She is very happy with her classes and has research opportunities for next year. There are many great programs at the U of A and many top AZ students go there turning down top colleges even Ivys because the price is right. There are many scholarships available to lure serious students AND of course there are parties if you want that. Tucson is a great town surrounded by mountains on all sides. I have heard that Eugene is beautiful as well. It comes down to fit ,both options are great. I would strongely suggest a U of A visit when school is in session to be able to compare as well as a night on campus to get a better feel for the school

Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the money to do this (I'm in college right now in Northern California). I really wish I had seen U of A while school was in session.

Party college -

Are you sure UofA has that rep? I thought it was ASU that had that rep.

U of A: Big time party school (by reputation and about 6 kids I know that go there)

bloocroo:

Looks like you're right - I see UofA is number 18 on Princeton Review's top 20 party schools but ASU isn't on their list. It's not on the PartySchoolNetwork's top 25 although ASU is number 2 there. It's also not on Playboy's top 10 list although ASU is number 3 there.

I am sure U of A has many great attributes. However, around our local HS, it is know as the school to apply to if you "screwed up" in high school but are basically an ok kid!

I disagree blucroo. I am a local interviewer for Tufts University and we have many bright students that are accepted to Tufts and choose U of A because they have recieved full scholarships there and can graduate with no debt. Many of my D's friends who were honor students AP tract throughout HS also chose U of A. My D transferred back here and loves it. It is al arge school and if you want to party you can but that is not what the school is about. It will be whatever you choose it to be.

arizonamom: I am sure that what you say is true. U of A is a bargain for out of state kids, especially. And, any serious student can make the most of such a big school with lots of opportunities such as those offered at U of A. They are known for school spirit and big on the sports/greek/social life scene.

Unfortunately, it has a reputation and I am just referencing the kids I know personally that ended up choosing U of A...........typically, not on the AP/Honors tract; often not sure where they wanted to go; generally bright kids who did not push themselves too hard during high school.

U of O (the OP's question) has the same big state U attributes that U of A has, but more of a small college town atmosphere (Eugene), options for more to see/do in and around the state (Oregon is lovely) AND less of a party reputation.

I made my decision last night; I'm going to University of Oregon.

Nooooo U of A forever!!! ;)

Haha, are you a Wildcats fan?

Definitely :) I'm from California too actually.

Congrats on your decision, WorriedStudent! You will love Oregon. Yeah, it rains (it's raining right now), but it's so green and pretty here. Summer and early fall is especially great: plenty of sunshine, but not too hot, and very little humidity.

And no sales tax!! :)
