University of Pennsylvania doesn't sound as prestigious as CORNELL

if someone says upenn is not prestigious, screw them and hold the us news chart in front of their face haha

with regards to the intelligence of the general public, has no one here wacthed the game show "Street Smarts"?

If you've seen it, you'd know that what the general public does or doesnt know doesnt mean anything.

I don't think anyone would think Cornell is better than Penn nowadays...except for Cornell students and fans...

But Cornell and Penn degrees will still both impress any employer as one of the world's best schools, which in the end is what matters.

living in the midwest is awful, because every single person i mention upenn too starts to talk about penn state and the "football and great dentistry program...." I'm starting to get tired of cutting people off and correcting them mid-conversation

Well they're right about the "great dentistry program". Penn State doesn't have a dental school!

Please understand that most people don't even attend schools as good as the Ivies and they still do very well in life. An Ivy-League school can ONLY HELP YOU.

Barry D stated:
who ran for president of the United States in 2004? Bush, Kerry, Dean (A BUNCH OF YALE GRADS).

Bush Senior and Clinton also have Yale degrees...

If you want to play with the big boys today, you need Harvard or Yale...

Penn is only good for Wharton.
Yeah, just like Reagan, LBJ, and Truman, none of which went to your beloved school...

Not to say that Yale isn't a great institution, but to say that you NEED to go to Yale to be a powerful political player is absurd. Karl Rove will tell you that.

Most politicians need to have their bid heads deflated anyway.

The point is, many of the most important people today are NOT Ivy League grads. Let's list a few powerful people today and their credentials:

Condy Rice- not Ivy
Karl Rove- far from Ivy
Tom DeLay- Nope
Dennis Hastert- Nope
Nancy Pelosi- Nope
Etc. etc.

There are so many influential people in Washington without Ivy degrees it's absurd. Most people don't know about their government anyway though, and they think it starts and ends with the executive branch.

dude, barry, chill out. Don't go to Penn then. Not everyone wants to go to stuck up schools like Harvard. I couldn't stand it when I went there. I mean wow like sorry Penn isn't the best school in the country, but it's kind of up there isn't it? I don't want to know what you think of private schools that aren't ivies or ::gasp:: state schools for that matter.

I was in Cancun last spring and ran into some drunk people with Penn State shirts. I was wearing a Penn shirt. They saw it and said, "you go to Penn State?" and I said "no, I go to Penn. The Ivy League one."

Then there was a pause as they processed this thought..then they shouted "WOOO PENN STATE" and left.

That didn't really have any important meaning to it. Just a funny story.

ah yes penn state, one of the many schools I applied to (the parents made me). I know about 50 kids going there next year. Philadelphia just ships students up there. Haha. And the people I know who are going are all ready obnoxiously going Penn State! Woo!

And the scary part is, despite the lack of prestige, PSU students still strike it rich! Gasp!

yes indeed. and their honors program is amazing I hear. I never wanted the rural setting so I never wanted to go there. Besides, I'd be paying the same for PSU and Upenn so why not go to the school that's only 30 minutes from my house.

It doesn't matter if the "gneral public" knows Penn as an Ivy. Anyone who has an IQ above 100 knows how prestigious it is.
Besides who are you trying to impress in life...law/graduate schools and corporate "hot shots", or Jethro and Billy-Bob down at the Jiffy Lube?

Only myself.

Society moves in phases. Years ago, a student went to an Ivy League to obtain the best "corporate job" he/she could. These days, you can graduate from a State U and still acheieve a great deal of success. However...mark my words, the whole Ivy infatuation will roll around again and corporate giants will be scurrying to hire Ivy graduates...just like the Liberal Arts. Liberal Arts is making a huge comeback (look out business majors) :)

In the end, it doesn't really matter, because success is determined by YOU.

Exactly... but I can't say going to a prestigious instituion will hurt you in life...:)

Well that would be absurd. But to say that a truly motivated person will be crippled by their lesser-known university borders on madness.
