What is it like? The campus, social life, academics, etc?

Bump !!!!!

Look under Colleges and Universities and then go to Alphabetical List of Colleges. Here you will find all kinds of info on the University of Pittsburgh. Many of us have asked questions that have been answered by current students, parents of students or recent graduates. They have been very helpful in helping us make the decision to go there.

I see from your other posts that you are looking into going to med school and I'm assuming that you are from Ohio since you are comparing OSU and OU. If you care about school rankings, Pitt med school is ranked 18, OSU is 38 and Case Western Reserve is ranked 28. Pitt is mostly known for their health related fields such as med school, nursing, pharmacy and rehab services. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is literally on campus with tons of opportunities be it research, first hand learning opportunities or just getting a job while in school. We are from Ohio and my daughter was interested in their nursing program. It is now ranked 6th in the nation and is better than any of the schools in Ohio. She was also able to get a full tuition scholarship as an OOS. I would definitely look into Pitt if you are interested in a health related field. I recommend that you look specifically at the U of Pitt site on collegeconfidential. It should help answer some of your questions.

Pitt is a VERY urban campus. I liked it a lot, but my son didn't. They offer students free public transportation to anyplace in the city - which I think is fabulous. Also, Pittsburgh itself is really a nice city.

I thought their engineering department (which is what we looked at) seemed very nice. Personal, small enough that the kids aren't just numbers, and lots of good support in place. I do not know how it would be for pre-med, probably depends how competitive of a student you are (like most pre-med programs). Yes, Pitt has a huge medical school/hospital presence, but how that really translates to opportunities for undergraduates may require some looking into. (You always have to be careful about that - just because there is a huge medical facility present, doesn't necessarily mean it's full of undergrads doing interesting things!)

Pitt does give out scholarships to OOS, but my impression is that they go to VERY high stat kids, and not very many of them. My son, who has very good stats, did not get a penny from Pitt, and several private schools ended up the same price as Pitt for OOS.

I know you were also looking at OSU, OU. Pitt will draw many more out-of-state students from the big east coast cities than any of the Ohio schools. So, lots more NY/NJ/MA/CT kids.

Thank you for all that information! I will make sure to check it out.. and actially, I'm not from Ohio I'm a NY resident.. looking to get out of the state for a change and college experience

Alice - If you have high SAT scores, be sure to check out OU's Gateway Scholarship program. For us, OU would have cost under $10K/year including room and board.

First things first, Alice90, it's spelled "Pittsburgh."

Check out the Pitt fourm here, there's a lot of threads talking about the campus.

Campus: Urban. It's in the heart of Pittsburgh. If you've never been to Pittsburgh, it is probably nothing like you imgaine it. The industrial era is long gone, and Pittsburgh has reinvented itself. It is a leading city for technology, medicine, culture, business, architecture, and education. It had been named America's most livable city due to low crime rate, low cost of living, recreational opportunities, etc. The school is actually located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, which is also home to Caarnie Mellon Chatham, and Carlow Universities, as well as most of Pittsburgh's major medical hospitals and museums. The campus is not as urban as a school like NYU; there is significant green space, and the school is next to one of Pittsburgh's largest parks. There are a ton of great restaurants and shops nearby. Again, check out Pitt's thread for more info.

Social life: There is a ton of stuff to do at Pitt. There are over 400 student organizations. There are a ton of places to hang out around campus as well, such as coffee shops, the student union, etc. Pitt students are quite outgoing and friendly. If you're into the part scene, the fraternities are known for throwing good parties. If you're not, there are museums, restaurants, the zoo, and so much more. The city is a wonderful place to explore. Pitt is has one of the best sports programs in the country and there is always a game to see.

Academics: Pitt is a world-class university. Its $1.8 billion endowment is 28th in the country. It has top programs in Business, Chemistry, Economics, English, Engineering, History, Philiosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Physiology. Its medical school is considered one of the elite. The Hillman Library is the 25th largest academic research library in North America. Pitt recruits some of the top professors from around the country. Pitt's travel abroad program has won various awards. It is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of the 62 top research universities in North America.
