Hello everyone! After choosing between a bs/md program and university of Pittsburgh, I selected it for my pre-med studies. I will be majoring in bioengineering. I have a 4.0 GPA and have taken AP Biology, AP Calculus BC & AB, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, Statistics, AP US, European History, Govt and Politics, Lit and Comp, and Language and Comp. I have a 5 on the AP language Test and European Test. I have a 4 on the US History Test and a 3 on the AP chemistry test. I’m waiting for scores on Calc BC and Lit. I plan to use as many credits as possible, but I’m not sure about the Chemistry and Calculus. Would I be ok to jump into chem 2 and calc 2? Also, for honors classes how many do you recommend someone taking and how important are they for med school admissions? Lastly, any advice on what teachers are better than others and what the best electives are?
Thank you!
If you want to start at advanced classes, make sure you still take enough credits in college in Chemistry to meet the premed requirements.
No, with a 3 in AP chem I don’t think you should skip Chem 1.
First year engineering is packed full of challenging classes, Chem, physics, Calc, engineering seminar, an elective, 17 or so credits. You also need a high GPA as a pre-med.
My D said Calc 1 was difficult at Pitt for students who took it.
2 Midterms are worth 50% of grade
Final 30 % of grade
HW/Quizzes 20% of grade
Apparently your final grade can only be a letter grade higher than the grade you got on the final. :">
Placing out is fine if you feel prepared to take the next level in that series - as one builds to the other…so if you do well on the AP calc test, then maybe yes you can place into calc 2 or higher. For chem - your 3 on the AP tests might suggest that you aren’t so strong there - and to go into chem2, maybe would be difficult. Only you can tell that. As far as the other APs and using as many credits…the only thing the credits will do is satisfy a few humanities electives - not allow you to graduate early. As a premed, you might appreciate the humanities classes to boost your gpa. Honors classes are typically smaller class sizes and more in depth, but difficult. You should take honors for classes that truly interest you.
Will med schools accept AP credit for pre med requirements?
