University of Pittsburgh BS/MD Program

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I posted on these forums... since like last year.

However, some good news has been coming my way.

I have applied to MANY colleges. Here's the List.

Pitt
Northwestern
PSU
Drexel
Rice
NEUOCOM
U of Rochester
Case Western

Here's the ones I am in the PROCESS of applying to.

Temple
U of Miami (FL)
U of Cincinatti
Brown
G Wash

All of those universities have combined bachelor's MD programs.

Here's the good news: I have been accepted into UPitt, and have received a full tuition scholarship. I am in the process of applying for the Chancellor's scholarship, which covers room, food, and some stipend.

Here's the not so good news: I haven't heard back from any of my other colleges. Is it because they focus on deadlines (since Pitt is rolling admissions) or they require more?

Basic Stats:
GPA: 4.5
Unweighted: 3.985

All honors 9th and 10th, All AP 11th and 12th

SAT 1: 2140, 800M, 650CR, 690W
SAT II:
Math IIC- 800
Chem - 790
Physics - 760
U.S. History - 730

Good Cultural/Indian curriculars.

Volunteering and working in cancer Research lab
Shadow multiple doctors on multiple occasions
Basic clubs (NHS, tutoring, etc.)
Play Tabla (Indian instrument)
Tennis 9-12 (Varsity only 12)

My main lack is clubs, which I have realized.

Rank: 2/350.. going to admit that school isn't very competitive at all.

I suppose what I'm asking is whether I should stop freaking about the other colleges, and my chances (basic) at each of the combined programs at each of those schools.

I'm assuming you're talking about Pitt's BS/MD program, right? If that's the case, then to whatever extent you care about USN rankings, you should remember:

Pitt's med school is the second-highest ranked among all the programs you just mentioned (behind Rice's Baylor program). Northwestern is quite a bit back, Case Western basically the same as NW, and nobody else is even remotely close.

So now that you've got a full-tuition ride at a top-15 med school well in hand, I'd actually recommend not only "not worrying" but actually writing all the other schools in question to withdraw your application.

Trust me. You don't want to be the kid to turn down Pitt for Brown just because Brown is in the Ivy League and you forgot to check how good the med school actually is.

oh, dont you worry blue devil. Pitt is my first choice. definitely.

I know about your knowledge of medical schools, and it IS comforting to have you say something like 'withdrawing' my application at other schools.

I had that feeling as well (that i'll get into the Pitt program) but didn't wanna brag and seem boa****l about it.

thanks for the advice, but I'll wait until I get formally accepted at Pitt to withdraw my application at other schools.... or just deny them at that point.

oh I forgot to mention in my first post (and I can't edit it), but I also went to a couple sessions of CTY (Summer 03 and 05) and Pennsylvania Governor School for Health Care in summer of 2006 (which happened to be at University of Pittsburgh itself.)

With that said, I'm a huge fan of Baylor's program. So you'd want to push for Rice if you possibly could.

But yes, absolutely - wait for the paperwork to come in before you do anything rash.

PS: I'm rather amused by the computer's censoring of your boast_ful. I had to stare at it a minute to figure out what was going on.

oh what the...

haha I see why its asteriked out.. I didn't even notiec that when I posted.

I like baylor's program as a whole, but the whole not going to college driving distance away makes me less attracted to it. Going to a college where I can drive home/picked up by a car (Pitt, PSU, Temple, Drexel, Rochester, Northwestern, NEUOCOM, etc.) > going to a college where I have to fly home (Rice, USC- one of the reason's i'm not even applying there, Miami)

Well, Baylor certainly is further away from Pittsburgh than... Pitt.

That's certainly never something I bothered with (went to college 3500 miles from home when local schools wanted to pay me to attend), so I'll simply say this: make sure to visit Baylor should you be lucky enough to get in. I know it's a hassle. I know it's a pain to travel. Trust me, I've gone back and forth a few times a year over very long distances.

But some things are worth it. My guess? You'll find that Baylor would be one of them.

the pitt program is that 8-year, maintain a 3.7 GPA, etc one right?

yea, that's it.

the 3.7 gpa is going to be rough, but if I pad my classes (and go 12 credit semesters) I should be able to pull it off.

evil are you applying to that wash-st louis deal...since you're doing the Pitt app.....

you know you probably have really good chances.....did you go to that governors school thing? PGSHC? won't that make you look extra special in their eyes?

wash-st louis...

no idea what you're talking about.

if you're talking about the obscure st louis one, I don't think so. St.Louis is 2 far away for me, plus it's not like a GOOD school (like baylor, brown, etc.)

but specify for me what program this is, and provide a link please :)

http://admissions.wustl.edu/admissions/ua.nsf/3rd%20Level%20Pages_USP_USP_medicine.htm?OpenPage&charset=iso-8859-1

holy crap. look at the requirements for that

3.8 through college
36 on MCAT?

that's too rough for me.
3.7 through college is hard enough, i'll pass on that one.

hahah 3.7, 3.8 ...eh close enough at least i gave you a link

and its a really reputable med schoolhence the reqs

There are two schools in St. Louis. You have Washington University in St. Louis, which floats between #2-#4 in the rankings. Then you have St. Louis University, which at the moment (I believe) is around #62.

Again, this presumes that you pay attn. to USN's research rankings, which are generally not that useful if you're not interested in academic medicine.

And trust me, for a bright kid, getting a 3.8 if you pad your schedule isn't that big a deal. The problem is that padding your schedule is a dumb thing to do - unless you have that guaranteed program under your belt.

A 3.8, 36 would not normally be enough to get you into a top 3 program. But in this world, you're allowed to take joke classes, retake the MCAT multiple times, and have an unbalanced score, and still be fine.

It's worth a shot, at least, if you're interested.

what's that ucinn med school's rep? it looks just okay to me

Aspen, I forgot to mention it in my original post (and I couldn't edit in) but yes, I did attend PGSHC this past summer.

mike, I may consider applying there, its just I want to finish all my other applications first. I suppose if I can apply to rice/baylor I can apply to st. louis

ucinn med school rep = probably not very good, but because its near by (in Ohio) i'm applying there.
