Which has a better neuroscience curriculum & research opportunities?

I’ve heard Pitt has one of the best neuroscience programs in the nation. So my vote is for Pitt.

Wow, that’s a tough one. Michigan is just a totally great school, but Pitt sure wins in neuroscience.

If I were a kid, totally excited by my intended field, it would be hard not to jump at Pitt. But as the parent of such a kid, I’d suggest looking at the merits of the overall university, and considering that graduate school would be the place to delve deeply into neuroscience; you won’t be popping out of undergrad to take a nice job in neuroscience.

And of course, if you’re a resident of either MI or Pa, I would think that the cost/benefit ratio would be a massive factor in your decision. If you’re from MI, it would sure feel good to wind up at Pitt for grad school with an extra $100k in your pocket, you know?

The NRC rankings say Pittsburgh is not better in neuroscience than Michigan. Michigan is more selective, more known, better in practically every field, more fun, and more research opportunities especially with UROP. I don’t see how it’s close unless you live in Pennsylvania.

Yes, U. of Michigan as a whole university has a better academic reputation. But much of that reputation is built upon their graduate programs, not their undergrad teaching.

Many college students love going to college in the city of Pittsburgh. The area around Pitt includes CMU, the Carnegie, many parks and interesting neighborhoods. If you enjoy professional sports, it is easy to get to the stadiums and arenas by public transit. Students enjoy using the public transit system, which is free to students.

Pittsburgh’s revitalization has been built upon health care and higher education. The U. of Pittsburgh’s main medical campus is right next door to the university and has been growing like crazy. There are plentiful research opportunities in health care related fields.

yeah it seems that pitt would have more research opportunities (correct me if i’m wrong here)

All those wonderful things that hippo says about Michigan vs. Pitt are true, and I’d much prefer Michigan in general. However, although M is “better in practically every field”, it just so happens that neuroscience is one of the exceptions. That’s what makes this thread interesting.

Yeah sure, like Pittsburgh is known for it’s undergraduate teaching over a school like Michigan.

Gee, I don’t see Pittsburgh anywhere on the above list. Furthermore, Michigan also boasts a a major health care complex that is growing like crazy. It is also located continguous to the main campus in the ultimate college town.

i never even knew that link existed before. thanks
