University of Pittsburgh, UMass, Boston University....

Hey everyone this is my 2nd post cuz nobody really answered at first and I'm really worried about getting into my schools of choice and getting enough money to pay for the school. My GPA is like a 2.8 as a junior and I am taking 3 aps next year I have taken 4 this year and pretty much all honors classes since freshman year. I am enrolled into the Science and Tech program at ERHS and participate in Varsity Soccer for 3 years and JV Soccer freshman year. I will be in Varsity Wrestling hopefully next year but I will at least be on JV wrestling and maybe Varsity Tennis. I have done a science fair sophomore year and this year I will be doing a Research Practicum and maybe an internship over the summer (I dont know in what yet but I did apply to the Sickle Cell center at Howard). I am part of the Russian and French Clubs at my school and I am looking for more clubs next year and hoping do more EC over this year and next. I gained over 200+ hours as a volunteer counselor at a camp. I am also fluent in french and have 5 years studying russian. The classes I would have taken as of Senior Year are:

English honors 9-11 ,AP Lang
French 4, AP 5
Russian 3-AP 5
Geometry honors Algebra II honors, Trig Honors, Pre Calc honors
US History honors, US Gov honors, AP World History, Practical Law/Psychology (I'm not sure yet)
Engineering Foundation I, II
Health, PE
Genetics, Biology S/T, Chem S/T, AP Physics, AP Biology, Microbiology, Physiology

I want to be a bio major or Pre med so I think I have some colleges chosen so far and they are:

University of Pittsburgh (my top), University of Massachusetts at Amherst (2nd), University of Boston, Baylor University, Northeastern University, and UMBC (my fallback i think) and maybe St. Johns.

So guys what are my chance really 2 get into these schools. And what are my chances of getting money from them. I am hispanic and african american by the way. And as of so far my dad is unemployed and my mom has a crap job that only get s her like 10k per year I think she said. I haven't taken SATs of yet I am planning for the May 1st one and haven't taken AP testing yet. But on my pre and post test for practice SAT my total was like a 1800 if helps.

Geez can some1 help plz geez

You need to improve both your gpa and your test scores. You will get a bit of an advantage from your URM status but that won’t offset your stats. Don’t focus on your ECs…focus on your grades and tests. You will likely not get into Pitt, BU, Baylor or Northeastern as you stand right now.

BU:

23% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
33% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
19% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
20% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
5% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

-Sorry buddy, but your chances there are very slim, especially with a “nothing special” SAT.

Pitt:

65% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
17% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
11% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
5% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
2% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

-Even lower of a chance

UMass Amherst:

33% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
28% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
24% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
13% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
2% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

-Same thing…

Baylor:

No Info.

Northeastern:

No Info.

UMBC:

42% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
18% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
13% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
12% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49

You should relax on the AP/Honors curriculum. Regardless of the saying, “a B in an honors or an ap class if better than an A in a regular class,” you need to get your GPA up, in any means necessary. Don’t take blow-off classes, but take something a little less challenging than those AP’s and Honors.

Since Pitt is your top choice, if you can’t get into the main campus in Pittsburgh, you might want to see if it possible to go to one of its four regional campuses (Greensburg is the closest, Johnstown probably the best) and see if you can transfer in after a year. You’d need to talk to someone at Pitt about that though in order to make sure you’d be able to do it smoothly.
