What is University of Redlands like/known for? Is Redlands an interesting place to live in or does it get boring? I've heard it referred to as "deadlands" and I'm looking for a school with a pretty active nightlife in an interesting location.

I only know a few things about it. Redlands is in the middle of the Inland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and is about 90 minutes from downtown LA. It is suburban small city/town but is a bit more sophisticated than the surrounding areas. I still don’t think you can call it interesting but college life is likely to have it’s own scene. If you have a car you’d be able to access L.A., southern cal beaches skiiing and San Diego from time to time. There is likely stuff to do right around the school, but I really don’t know how active the nightlife is, it is a small place. There is some commuter aspect to the school as they have many programs for adults and working professionals, but the undergrad is like a residential medium LAC size.

One of the programs that I’ve heard is very good and not taken advantage of enough is the Johnson Program, which is a mentored program for independent study or design your own major. Apparently you get very good guidance and support to make it a successful program. However, the 6 year grad rate for the school overall is not especially great at 63%.

I know a girl who was near the higher end of their stats range who was offered a $10,000 per year merit scholarship.

Redlands has an excellent music department. It is also one of the few residential liberal arts colleges on the west coast, with a beautiful campus surrounding a grassy quad. They field all types of sports, including football. The city of Redlands is situated at the foot of Mt. San Gorgonio, close to winter ski resorts, Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear, and Palm Springs. There are a multitude of historic Victorian homes in the city, especially Morey Mansion and Kimberly Crest, and other architecturally noted buldings like the Smiley Library.
