Hello everyone. I am a junior in high school and just need to clarify some things about the university of Rochester. 1. Do they really not care about your high school gpa in addmission’s? I saw some things that say yes and others that say no. I have a 3.6-3.7 unweighted in a rigorous environment just for the conversation 2. Do they get any recognition for their business majors? I kind of have an asset management job already, but I want the best preparation and I only plan to stay for 4 years tops as I plan to pursue hedge funds afterwards 3. Why is the university of Rochester ranked so high in some rankings, and so mediocre in others? 4. I can pretty much go wherever I want for golf in d3 at least. Should I go higher or would Rochester be a good fit for someone with a 3.6-3.7 uw, 2020, and a 31 who wants grade inflation, and some sort of life outside golf and school? I’m also looking at Emory, nyu, and Lehigh for further discussion.
- Yes, transcript is generally the most important factor in admissions andU Rochester is no exception. However, it is evaluated in the context of your school (e.g. grade inflation/deflation) and how rigorous the curriculum you took was relative to the rigor available to you. At Rochester, the average UW GPA is 3.7-3.8, so you are pretty close.
- It's not one of the schools which is known to give people a leg up in investment banking, high-end consulting firms, etc., although I don't know beyound that.
- Which rankings are you referring to? By subject? By ranking organization?
- You fall into the general stats for URochester class profiles. If you "go higher" significantly in terms of admissions selectivity, you will be applying to schools where your admissions chances are small. However, whether or not the school is a good fit is dependent on quite a bit more than whether or not you can gain acceptance.
Please clarify what you mean by wanting grade inflation? I am very sure Rochester doesn’t inflate grades. There is a thread on this forum right now, it is called “what do you like about university of Rochester.” Please read the comments by creekland’s son, a student there. As far as I am aware, Rochester never seems to be ranked mediocre. If what you mean is “not top 20” that is a different story. I think it is probably fair to say that Rochester is comparable to CMU, WUSTL, JHU and Cornell, (according to the Fiske Guide.) If you are talking about name recognition, that is different. I suspect it is underrated because it is in Rochester. I just checked, it is ranked 33 in USNWR.
If you want to go to Rochester, I suggest you take the ACT and try for a score of 32 or above, or the new SAT, as I think your test scores are not quite as strong as they ought to be.
FWIW, my D just got accepted, her GPA is about 3.75, but her test scores are considerably higher than yours at 2240.
If you are looking for grade inflation (easy classes to get easy As in) you’d best look elsewhere. URoc is a research institution. From what I’ve seen, they expect a high level of knowledge coming in and work from there - often on very new things.
My youngest son sat in on a Bio class at URoc and other places. Afterward he called the other places “Bio-lite.” Middle son sat in on a humanities class elsewhere and was surprised at the lack of discussion and pre-reading needed compared to what he was used to at URoc.
Students who come to URoc tend to be those who like learning and are willing to put in effort to do it. They are not those who are looking to “get by with the basics.”
Thank you. I can go to any d3 school I want plus some d1 for golf, so getting accepted wasn’t the issue. I am already talking to the coach and just want to have some things clarified. Thank you for the advice though.
Sorry, that was for lindagaf
